The character of Mr. Parline demonstrates how tradition changes and the different ways people adapt to societal change. While the rest of the neighborhood takes down their fences and changes with the rest of society, Mr. Parline keeps his fence up and dutifully keeps up his garden and weather records just as he always has.

The author used Mr. Parline as an example of someone who lives differently from the average community, yet has a relatable desire to cling obsessively to the things that bring him meaning and purpose. We see this in his interaction with his garden, his home, his wife, and his neighbors. He contributes a sense of friendliness and control to every aspect of his life. When it comes to his neighbors, he creates meticulous designs that show them how much he cares. His garden is fiercely protected which is shown by its unearthly neatness. Mr. Parline will rush home every time there is a storm to help calm his wife's fear, and even after she dies he rushes to the grave yard as if he can still protect her. He is obsessive about checking the weather and seems to take personal responsibility for protecting and alerting his neighbors of the weather. All these things he does in a systematic and consistent way which shows his love of consistency.

Mr. Parline represents an unusual character who defines selflessness and care throughout his actions in the story. For example, one part of the story said " Old Mr. Parline had the heart of a poet and the eye of an interior decorator." This furthers my point that he took careful note of everyone he knew. The "heart of a poet" would indicate that his kindness to others was well thought-out. I think of a poet as one who thinks of what they are writing carefully to convey the idea they want to convey. Similarly, Mr. Parline carefully looked after all who he knew.

Mr. Parline is a character whose values seem insignificant compared to society's values.

"It seemed so small, so trivial, that a man should give so much time and thought to that which he could not change." To society, Mr. Parline's fascination and all-encompassment by the weather seemed silly. When his wife, Mrs. Parline, died, he continued on in this routine like nothing happened. Mr. Parline acts contrarily to what society would expect after his wife died. Most of society would endure some change in personality or values after a traumatic event, but Mr. Parline stay consistent with his values. Some would ask, why should you care what the weather is after enduring such a tragedy? But to Mr. Parline, the weather was his life and leaving that behind would be an even bigger tragedy.

I got to this conclusion by the way that Mr. Parline thinks and acts. Mr. Parline reminds me of a grandpa because he is very generous to others. For example, "he [Mr. Parline] would bring us edibles from his garden all summer long on a home-made flat wooden tray." The story also talks about Mr. Parline giving vegetables and fruits to people he met for the first time in a cemetary. The character of Mr. Parline also reminds me of a grandpa because he wants to keep his wife safe. When I say Mr. Parline reminds me of a loving grandpa, I mean that grandpas grew up in a different time than us, and their actions reflect that.

In "The Man Who Caught the Weather," Mr. Parline portrays the image of an individual who is deeply troubled by the things around him and therefore tries to control them.

Evidence:

I believe that Aldrich wrote about Mr. Parline in the way that he did to warn others about the danger of trying to control your life. At the very end of the story, we find Mr. Parline killed by the weather. The thing that he was ultimately trying to control ended up controlling him. Due to his tendency to control everything Mr. Parline tries to look out for everyone, even to the point of apologizing for bad weather. '' 'I am very sorry,' he said in his gentle, half pompous way. 'I had thought- had every reason to believe- that it would be sunshiny.' " The family recognizes how kind he is, but is rather confused by his "oddness." They don't understand why he is so obsessed with the weather, and in general why he behaves the way he does. I believe the author is showing how one can appear to be happy on the outside but is deeply struggling. In this case, Mr. Parline was struggling with the idea that he couldn't control his life and always protect everyone from the weather, which prompted him to act the way he did.

Mr. Parline is a character who is extremely generous, yet also struggles with control, and those qualities became more evident after his wife's passing. The author intentionally crafted Mr. Parline's actions and speech to demonstrate those character qualities. Not only is Mr. Parline generous with his resources by bringing his neighbors the plants from his garden which he referred to as, "Just a little of the fruits of my labor", but he is also generous with his time by warning his neighbors about the weather forecast. However, he was also consumed with tracking the weather, and the author intentionally used his dialogue to show that. When the weather was pleasant, he said things like, "Well, how do you like my June day?" and when it was poor, he apologized for it as if it was his own doing. When his wife died, he came to his neighbors with gifts more often than before, and he became even more obsessed with the weather by going out to the cemetery at the sign of every storm, maybe because he still wanted to make an attempt to protect his wife.
