Pyromania linked to Depression

In the book by Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451 , Bradbury depicts how depression is linked to pyromania. He displays this with the character Guy Montag. In the beginning, Montag seems to be happy because of his attachment to his pyromania. Guy describes his passion of pyromania as a pleasure. In the first part of the novel it says “It was a pleasure to burn.”(Bradbury1). He finds comfort in fire, which is a symbol of Montag's comfort and security in fire. Montag was so absorbed in his pyromania, that he would say kerosene was his perfume and feel in control when he set the fires. But toward the last parts of the books Montag starts to lose his addiction to pyromania and becomes depressed. He first begins to become depressed when he had the conversation with Clarisse about being happy. Then he starts to become more and more unhappy when he starts to understand how society has become and how no one connects. “...the house and the ‘family.'That's awful!”(Bradbury69), this quote demonstrates how some people have become attached to their televisions more than real people. In the end he finds freedom in the railroad, which symbolizes Montag losing his pyromania.

In Fahrenheit 451 the author Ray Bradbury depicts how depression and pyromania has become normalized in society. He displays this with the character Guy Montag and the fire department. In the beginning Montag and his crew seem to think burning books and the houses is seen as being alright. This society has even started a fire department dedicated to burning. “With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head, and his eyes all orange flame with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire…”(Bradbury1). Ray Bradbury demonstrates how depression has become such an epidemic that it has become a normal routine in this society. Depression in this society had lead to many overdosing/ suicide attempts that they had to start sending operators instead of an M.D.. ‘“We get these cases nine or ten a night. Got so many, starting a few years ago, we had the special machines built. With optical lens, of course, that was new; the rest is ancient. You don't need an M.D., case like this; all you need is two handymen, clean up the problem in half an hour.”(Bradbury13). Ray Bradbury demonstrates how these mental disorders have become such a normal behavior that no one sees a problem.

In recent research, there has been evidence of pyromania and depression be linked together and being just separate disorders. Most pyromaniacs are male, and as we can see in Fahrenheit 451 the fireman are all male. Guy Montag is a pyromaniac who also suffers from depression. He falls under one of the main five categories. People with mental disorders such as being paranoid, depressed, and psychotic are more likely to be pyromaniacs (“Pyromania” Psychology). In many instances Guy Montag is portrayed as a man with multiple disorders including paranoia, depression, and pyromania. Guy demonstrates some symptoms of depression such as an impulse disorder, frustration, anxiety, difficulty focusing, etc. (“Depression (Major)”). Also, Guy shows signs of depression because of his loss of interest. Mildred has depression and has committed substance abuse. Mildred demonstrates an abundance of symptoms of depression. Her symptoms/signs of depression include sleeping to much, difficulty remembering, suicidal actions, and isolating herself (“Depression Central”). Depression and Pyromania share many symptoms as shown above being demonstrated by Guy and Mildred Montag. So in conclusion, pyromania and depression can be connected and can also be separate.

In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, depicts how an addiction can affect the people around you. Mildred is a great example of someone who is affected by a person with an addiction. Montag who is a Pyromaniac is the cause of Mildreds mental issues. Mildred is ignored and not really cared for in her relationship with Montag. That is why she always has her seashells in, so she can stay distracted. “And in her ears the little Seashells, the thimble radios tamped tight, and an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk and music and talk coming in, coming in on the shore of her unsleeping mind.” (Bradbury10). Another effect of Montag's addiction is the fact that Mildred has become attached to the “Family”. She has become so attached to the “Family” than Montag, that she can not stand the idea of losing them. “...the house and the ‘family.’That's awful!”(Bradbury69). Mildred and Montag are a great example of the cause and effect of addiction. This shows how most of the other fireman's marriages are and others with addictions relationships.

During the 1950s when Fahrenheit 451 was written, depression was considered a rare condition. Anxiety/depression was at the forefront of medical and psychiatric attention in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Depression and anxiety were considered a rare disease before World War II period, then became the focus of mental health concern.(Horwitz). Following after the time period the book was written to the present (now a days), our time period is going through an epidemic of depression. Over twenty percent of the Americans will experience at least one episode of what is referred to as clinical depression. (“Is Our”). “The common psychological features of these problems include a mélange of symptoms involving nervousness, sadness, and malaise. The typical physical symptoms consist of headaches, fatigue, back pain, gastrointestinal complaints, along with sleep and appetite difficulties. Often accompanying are struggles with interpersonal, financial, occupational, and health concerns.”(Horwitz). The symptoms that were normal in the past are still the same today, but more common than they were back then. Just like the society from the novel, some people today live their lives in a robotic way and act almost mechanical. In today's world there is about 15.7 million adults in the US who have reported having at least one major depressive episode. "That is 6.7% of all U.S. adults ages 18 and older."(“Depression Central”). The past compared to today's present seems to have fewer people with depression and other health issues than the present/future.

Have you ever wondered why someone has depression and/or pyromania or how they get these disorders? Someone who has depression could “describe depression as a black hole or a curtain coming down over their life...In fact, some people with depression do not feel sad as much as lifeless or empty.”(Bjornlund). Many experts seem to believe that depression is a result of a combination of genetics, biochemical, environmental, and psychological factors.( Bjornlund). In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury uses imagery when describing Mildred's bedroom in part 1. Mildred`s bedroom is a symbol of depression and how it feels for most people suffering with it. On the other hand someone with pyromania could have gained this disorder by being curious like a child or because of other psychiatric disorders.(Burton). People with Pyromania do not usually end up committing arson. “Pyromania is a rare diagnosis, even among first-time and recidivist arsonists.”(Burton). Most pyromaniacs are statistically male, which explains why the fireman in Fahrenheit 451 are all men.(“Pyromania Psychology”). Most pyromaniacs are known to be loners and to use fires as a stress reliever. Some symptoms of pyromania can be hallucinations, anger, anxiety, depression, etc.(“Pyromania Psychology”). Montag is an example of the few people who are diagnosed with pyromania, and has a curiosity for fire just like a child would. Also Montag has most of the symptoms you would see in someone with pyromania.
