         <title>Belonging Tool Kit Reflection</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Fostering a sense of belonging is an important foundation for developing any classroom. It is one of the instructor’s primary responsibilities to develop a sense of community and social support for all learners, regardless of age. This is of paramount importance for establishing a basic sense of social ease, and an underlying social structure for the class, which is especially necessary for adult learners who often have limited time and many other responsibilities. Allowing students to participate in hands-on team building activities such as the Enigma Cylinders or in student focused group discussions like Expert Groups has been shown to increase the total group efficacy, in both online and offline modalities (Yoon, 2024). This makes sense, as we know that learning is an inherently social learning process (Vygotzy, 1978) and is done best upon the fulfillment of the student’s basic needs, including their need for social structure and support (Maslow, 1943). Engaging in an activity like Expert Groups that encourages students to bond in small groups with other class members with whom they have something in common (work experience, hobbies, etc.) whilst working together towards a common goal in the early parts of a semester can set the stage for friendships and professional relationships to develop and a sense of welcomeness, pleasantness, and belonging.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p><br></p>]]></description>
