My takeaways from the 1st school visit was that we were able to get all the students to participate in the rubber band car activity, and got all the students to do something they have never done before.

After the first round, we divided ourselves up and created two groups of three of us and had half the students with one group and the other half with the other group of us. This allowed us to work in smaller groups and it was much easier to gain the attention of the students in smaller settings.

Overall, I think that the process of this activity went pretty well. All the students we met were kind and wanted to talk, and the students participated throughout the entirety of the activity. The rubber band car is a great idea, however the rubber band aspect itself did not have a high success rate, which limited student success and led to student frustration. It was hard trying to help students when their car wouldn’t work even though it looked like the model. I think that planning and teaching an activity with a higher success rate would have made this entire process more enjoyable for both the students and us group members.

We started off instruction by having all of the students pay attention to one group member at a time and found it initially difficult to hold attention of the students as the classroom was very loud. My team then split off into two groups of three with one group at each table. The ratio from student to teacher was 2 to 1 which proved to be much more effective. I think we should split off into groups next time initially to make it go smoother.

The construction of the rubber band cars progressively became easier to teach to students as we practiced more with each rotation. Students were more engaged when they sat next to their favorite color supplies or friends. I chose to color coordinate supplies to seem more appealing and we had one student create a Spiderman inspired car!

Sidney Woessner, One of my takeaways is realizing I would do things a little differently next time. I will try not jump in and help the students the second I see they are being challenged. I think it would be better for me to let them think about it a little bit and problem-solve themselves first, and then step in to help. That way the have a chance to be challenged with out someone stepping in and doing it for them.

A key takeaway was getting to know students! Even though we had a time limit, I realize the importance of learning students' names. I asked students for their name and re-stated mine. Those same students were more likely to ask me for help. They also liked having the freedom to try the activity all by themselves. When I saw some of them struggling, I gave them an option and asked if they wanted my help or if they wanted to continue trying. They all wanted to continue trying on their own! 😊
