What Year 13 Students said would have helped them stay more motivated when they were in year 12

- In classes talk more about the jobs that relate to the subject
- Spend more time bringing in ideas that will help me stay motivated into classes i.e. employment skills type conversations on a regular basis

- Seeing the relevance of the topic to help me keep motivated.
- At the beginning and end of each topic do a session on why and how it is important for me in my future.
- Do future planning activities - what I want to do in the future

I asked year 13 students what might have helped them through what they termed their ‘rough patch’ or transition from year 12 to year 13:

- Having someone who cared about me in my class would have really have helped me stay at school.
- Someone caring about me would have made all the difference. Generally caring I came and being kind to me when I acted poorly and came late and didn’t look up would have helped me feel more confident. I know that is a big ask but I felt like a loser.
- I needed the support to return to school and I needed it from the people who I felt thought I was a loser.

Q. The difficulties that teacher faced with students not coming to class and then reappearing and then disappearing

- They understood that they were causing difficulties so that was partly why it was hard to return go back into class when they had been away.

- I know I couldn’t have expected it but having what I missed on a sheet may have helped me feel I could return without causing my teacher problems.
