The Roman artist goal was to try to make their art work so realistic that it would look like it could come to life.
In fact the Romans would make their art so life like that the viewer would be able to tell what it was about. That is why for many centuries many other artist studied Roman art to learn their techniques. These techniques are still carried out in modern day.

Roman statue

An aqueduct is an artificial channel, that transports water from one place to another. The aqueduct provides a sufficient, and controlled water supply, to meet basic needs, such as irrigation. The water supply in the aqueducts often came from distant mountains ranges. Rome's first aqueduct was built in 312 CE.

An Aqueduct

The large, magnificent bridges built in Rome, starting in the second century BCE is an example of engineering in Rome. An example of a stone bridge in Rome is the Pons Aemilius. Pons Aemilius was 135 meters, (443 feet) long. Around mid second century BCE, the Romans started to use concrete, to make their bridges, which greatly increased the durability of the bridges. The roman engineers, and builders began to fully understand the advantages of using arches in their bridges. The roman bridges had voussoirs, which were arches that were wedge shaped. This helped evenly distribute the weight, so the life span of the bridge increased.

Pons Aemilius

The excellent roman roads is an example of engineering in Rome. During the Empire, the roads stretched from northern England, to southern Egypt, with the total length of 120,000 km (74,565 miles). The roads were used to trade, travel, efficiently deploy armies, and to maintain control over the vast Empire. When the roads were being built, the builders, and army men who helped build the bridges encountered major problems, such as massive land evacuation, and transport for materials, especially over long distances. The roman roads had many layers that built them up. The layers in order included curb stones, rocks or gravel, finer gravel, and finally large polygonal rock slabs.

A Roman Road
