Early submarines were small and generally limited in operational capability. By 1900 they had developed into a standard tubular or cigar shape of single or double hull to minimize water pressure when submerged. By the First World War submarines were larger and more effective than their ancestors of only a few years before but were still relatively small at 100–750 tons. They were fitted with an electric engine for submerged travel and a gasoline engine for surface cruising. The gasoline engine gradually gave way to a more reliable and less dangerous diesel engine that did not give off dangerous fumes. Some French and the large British K-class submarines utilized steam power.
