1. Brown Vs Board of Education

Overturned the iconic and disastrous Plessy V Ferguson case. This change desegregated schools and led to important changes that begat he push for equality in education. Out of all the monumental events that shaped education, I believe this is the most significant and important. The was a necessary change that fixed a horribly flawed system from our dark past. Brown Vs Board of Education changed the way children interacted, those they had contacted with and grew up with and increased diversity across the United States. It was important in shaping the way we think and feel about each other, and provided a stronger motivation for multicultural education.

2. No Child Left Behind Act

Although more recent than many of the other events, I believe the No Child Left Behind Act made considerable changes to education. Though not without its flaws, the No Child Left Behind Act set out to provide provisions for disadvantaged students. It supported standard based education that is heavily implemented today. Because it required high standards and measurable goals, it created an accountable system that held schools responsible for narrowing the achievement gap and helping equalize education. Today, standards are important in equalizing schools across the nation and the students that partake in the system. No matter where you are learning, you learn the same material and come out with equal knowledge (or so the goal is anyway).

The Lau V. Nichols case deemed unequal education based on poor language proficiency to in violation with the Civil Rights Act. This court case is the third on my ranking because it recognized the disadvantage placed on immigrant children or those lacking in English understanding. Forcing schools to implement English education and supplemental classes was an important step forward to reducing struggle for foreign language students. As diversity broadens in the United States today, this event in history becomes increasingly important was well as the changes that came from it.

was a movement that required parents to ensure their children of reading abilities. Literacy was an extremely important step for education to grow across the United States. Without the ability to read, your opportunities were extremely limited. The push to force future generations to be literate was necessary for the right of education to be available to all. Without this first step, we couldn’t hope for education to look anything like it does today. Though the push was so anyone could read the Bible, it resulted in the ability to spread information and knowledge – making education far more efficient and attainable.

While the Plessy V Ferguson ruling resulted in legalized segregation in schools, this landmark decision in the US is immortalized in our history. Education today focuses heavily on America’s misgivings. The unconstitutional decision made during this case led to further racial discrimination and segregation as well as disenfranchisement for blacks. The court’s decision resulted a horrible spiral of racial disparity in the United States that we are still recovering from today. This event had many terrible repercussions and will continue to be remembered as a substantially impactful court case.
