Yes The reason why a freely suspended magnet always points to north-south direction is because the earth is a giant magnet, the core is made of molten iron and nickel. The geographical north pole is actually the magnetic south pole of the earth, hence attracts the north pole of a bar magnet. And Vice versa. This is because opposite poles of a magnet attract and like poles of a magnet repel and because magnets attract magnetic materials

Magnets are an interesting concept that is almost everywhere. The earth's core is made of magnetic materials like iron and zinc. This makes the whole world a magnet. Compasses work on this. The compass is drawn to the north side. They are called Loadstones because Load translates to leader, or lead, which means that these rocks have this name for leading the way for sailors and such.

- Directive property is, when a magnet is freely suspended, it will always point in the north-south direction
- The Earth is a huge magnet
- Using the directive property, the freely suspended magnet will always be in the north-south direction. These are the geographical north and south. However, since the Earth is a huge magnet, the north pole of the earth, will repel the magnet. Why? Because like repel and unlike attract. Thus, the geographical north pole, where the magnet's north pole is pointing, is actually the magnetic south pole of the Earth. Because like poles repel and the north pole of the magnet will attract the south pole of the earth, which is the geographical north pole.

A freely suspended magnet always points in the north south direction. This is due to the earth's magnetic poles, but this would not be possible as like poles repel and opposite poles attract. First let's look at why the earth has magnetic poles, Under some circumstances some magnetic materials act as magnet,You imagine earth as 1 big magnenet. Now what about the poles issue? Well, The geographic and magnetic poles are opposite,In simpler word the geological north pole is the magnetic south pole and vise versa.
