Health and Hygiene in the Elizabethan Age

Theaters sometimes were shut down because of the black plague. There were many hygienic reasons the black plague spread faster then than it might have if it were today. Even though we now know the black plague was caused by fleas and rats, they didn't back then. They would blame it on bad air or the stars and planets. Also, people bathed very infrequently. They just used perfumes to mask bad smells and tried to change their underclothes as much as possible because they used them to soak up dirt and bad smells.

Source

Lord Chamberlain's Men, the group that Shakespeare had been acting with, paid 12.5 percent of the cost of building the Globe Theatre. It's first decade as a theatre it became a favorite of theatregoers and also the company that helped build it. Sadly, the Globe burned after being set fire by a cannon in a play. Because they liked the theatre so much, the members of the Lord Chamberlain's Men paid to rebuild the theatre again.

Source
