Side on the Trojan War

The Trojan war began in the city of Troy when Paris of Troy took away Helen from her husband Menelaus, the king of Sparta. Furious with this, Menelaus sent his brother and other Greek gods to destroy the city of Troy. During this war, Athena fought on the Greek side against Aphrodite to let her father, Zeus, judge who will deserve a golden apple that determines if a person is the "fairest". As a way to offer Paris something which no other goddess could give, Athena offered him wisdom. Nonetheless, Aphrodite won the apple. As a result, both Hera and Athena were furious that this war pitted them against each other, so they vowed to destroy Paris and the city of Troy.

Important Myths

There are three myths that can define Athena's influence in the realm of Greek mythology: her birth from Zeus, her competition with Poseidon, and her involvement in the War of the Giants.

1) Athena was birthed from the head of Zeus, and after birth, she extended into his arms and enveloped them, as a fully armed adult. Athena is considered Zeus' favorite child, and it can be inferred that part of her wisdom could been the result of being born from Zeus' head. (Myth can be found here: https://www.greekmythology.com/Myths/The_Myths/Birth_of_Athena/birth_of_athena.html)

2) She participated in a competition for the city of Athens with Poseidon (the god of the sea), where she cultivated the first olive tree in the region. She happened to win after she presented to the tree to the Athenians. (Myth can be found here: http://www.greek-gods.info/greek-gods/poseidon/stories/poseidon-athena-contest/)

3) Athena was involved in the War of the Giants, where she buried Enceladus under Sicily by "throwing" the island toward him. Many do believe that Enceladus was buried specifically under Mount Etna, a volcano in Italy. (Myth can be found here: http://www.pitlanemagazine.com/cultures/the-war-of-the-giants.html)

*The Iliad is the earliest she is mentioned.

Athena is known for her extroverted and independent personalities, often being a free-spirited thinker. She represents wisdom and the roots of feminism, as she fights in many battles despite differing gender norms, all while thinking strategically on how to defend her home. Being the goddess of wisdom and war, she is not afraid to stand by her own ideals if they are threatened. As evidenced in her competition for Athens with Poseidon, and her success in the War of the Giants, she is ready to confront anyone who may interfere with her path to success. Athena is the daughter of Zeus, being birthed from his head as a grown adult.
