This was the first time I performed the dance fully with the music: it was here where I decided to incorporate the idea of using the space to convey my themes. I split the space into two and used one side as a symbol of longing for family and the other as loyalty to serving for the country. This was supported by the range of dynamics I previously explored.

I am making a dance by using the technique of choreographing around emotion from Candoco, the contrast of dynamics from the Laban Star, copy and paste (improvising and taking out the stronger movement to place into my solo), 16 ways to manipulate a movement with the focus on levels and staging and lastly, Richard Serra’s Verb List compilation to highlight the emotion of the character.

One of the main techniques I used when creating my solo was improvising based on a certain emotion: I performed confusion, fear, numbness and anger. This is drawn from the workshop with Candoco where we had to improvise based off of conflicting emotions. This technique was new to me as I had choreographed pieces first to then add dynamic range, emotion and a story alongside the movement: to compliment this, I used the Laban Star focusing on the range of dynamics I could experiment with like slow and jagged to fast and swift. With the aspect of staging and levels, I wanted to manipulate both in order to emphasise the story of the character by splitting the stage with one half being a metaphor of the family and the other being the duty to protect the country. To help portray this story, I also used movement from Richard Serra’s Verb List as inspiration as where I could take my movement next.

I am making a dance about a solider receiving a letter informing them of an impending outbreak of war, the solider is conflicted between staying at home to spend lost time with their family or to do his duties to protect the country. The first section highlights the numbness of the solider and shock at receiving the letter which is complimented with the ringing of the accompaniment. For the second section, the solider is having flashbacks to their previous time in war and re-experiencing the suffering at which they went through prior. Lastly, the soldier becomes detached and angry when they finally decide on their decision whether to stay home or go off to war. This choreography is episodic in terms of telling a story but with a flashback during the middle of the piece.

This is the stimulus I used for my solo which is an art piece from Tate Modern created by David AlfaroSiqueiros. When looking at the art, I drew from it a sense of destruction and raw emotion due to the abstract placement of the materials and the chaotic order. Given that the piece is created based around the Spanish civil war, I decided I wanted to portray a story the emotions of a solider and the destruction that war held upon them: instead of the after effects of war I wanted to do the impact prior to war as well.

At the end of the dance, I have decided to throw the ‘family’ piece of paper off stage and exit to the other half of the stage to represent the decision being made of going to war.
