Today I started to sketch some ideas for my musical instrument. The starter idea was to make an instrument that would make the sounds of water either dripping or bubbling or simply just moving.
Ideas
1. The first one was a xylophone using glasses and water, each recipient with a certain amount each time decreasing.
2. The second one is an idea to make the sound of water running, so I would make an object like an hourglass but with water inside and place it inside a cardboard chips packaging.
3. The third idea is to have that bubbly sound of when water enters a recipient through water pression. So there would be a water bottle inside a recipient and it would be opened and the water on the putside so when it is turned upside down the water emters the bottle and make bubbles.
4. The fourth is a metal can drums covered with balloon rubber on the top and water inside. Each can with a different amount of water. Then there would be a drum stick to play it.
5. The fifth idea is to make bubbly sounds again. I would use a straw inside many recipients woth diffefent amount of water inside.
6. The sixth I would just make the sound of water being shaked with nails or metal balls.
7. The seventh idea is to make running water sound and for that I would make or find an object with hourglass shape.
8. The eighth idea is a whisper with a little bit of water inside. Almost like a flute but it did not work when I tried to make a hold, it judt simply broke.

We started the day warming up because We didn’t have a clue on what to do, how to play or what rhythm it would be. So we decided to do a quick warm up and start playing in freestyle to feel the instruments and how they play along. Juliet made two instruments: a rain maker and a rubber band guitar-sound like; Marcello made a wood box with trash inside and a crank to roll the trash inside and make the sound; Nat made a metal drum with half circles cut out on the top part and each one has a diffrent size and is about 30 degrees opened up so when its hit it makes sounds and also there is a hole on the bottom part.
Then Nat suggested that we could record the instruments individually to put together in the software afterwards. But while we were recording we noticed the wind and city noises were interfering. Then we moved to a lab on the fourth floor which was a lot better. There we recorded more audios and we used only the Iphone with the headphones microphone to record them.
In the lab, we made a freestyle and decided to use that as a base for our music. So we recorded the instruments individually to gather them together in Adobe Premiere (we decided to use this program because it is the only one we know how to use).

And inside I put water, each of them containing different amounts. But when I tapped on the balloon with a stick there wasn’t much difference between them. So I tried putting rice and a spiral of smashed foil so the sound can be different than the others. The other can I put some plastic bags inside and rice. And the last one I put a little bit of water and the soound turned out different too. I got to do the editing and Nat helped me with critiques and suggestions throughout the editing. Marcello and Juliet were at the workshop but me and Nat were in the same lab as them right next to each other. Then we finished editing and exported the audio in mp3 and wav formats. We all thought the final result was successfull.

Our sound ended up making a lot of sense to nature and the human intervention. In the beggining it is only the cords sound and then comes the rain, after that it starts the beat of drums sounding like stomps and then Marcello’s instrument comes as if it was trash and buildings, then in the end it’s all a huge “pollution” of sounds and everything together. So it makes a lot of sense with how the world was at first and how it changed with our intervention. And our song came out of a freestyle warm up, because of that we decided to make the graphic score handmade and freestyle. So each one will choose a different material to work with on vegetal paper that makes sense with the instrument or sound that each one played. So there will be five sheets overlayed and the code is the different material used for each instrument. The idea is to start with a more clean visual and then by the end of the song it is all together and messy.

For the animation or image senquency we decided to make a video instead of animation. We attended to the workshops but we didn’t feel safe to do an animation for our lack of knowledge. The idea of the video is to place the camera facing down on the grass to represent our clean and beautiful environment and as the other instruments enters the song we start throwing things that represent the sound onto the ground. So the sound of trash will be us throwing lots of trash synchronized with the beat of the song. The rain will be water dripping from a sprinkler, the rattle will be sand falling on the ground and the drum sounds will be rocks. Then in the end to finalize the whole messy sounds it will be thrown a huge concrete block on top of all the trash and there will be no more green area in the video.

We decided to collect the materials we will use in the video on the weekend and on Monday we’ll start making the video.

We were thinking of making wether a video or a stop-motion but the idea was still the same: starting from the ground (grass if possible) with nature elements and then trash until there is no green left. But we used five instruments to make the song and Julliet was absent and we thought it would be difficult to show each instrument movements since we were only three and we would still need someone to keep checking the camera. So we decided to make a stop-motion because we would have more control of it.
We had already collected some trash for the video but we still needed elements to represent nature and some construction trash for the man intervention concept. Me and Nat went out to collect flowers and leaves, concrete and other trash for the video. And for the background we chose to use the chroma key in the photo studio. The camera we used was from the iPhone attatched to a tripod we borrowed from EBAC.

The code for the sound we used was the main beats. Because there are so many different sounds by the end of the song we thought it would be easier to work with the main sounds. The first instrument was Julliet’s that is made of rubber band strings and then the rain maker enters and for that we used flowers and leaves. The part of the leaves is for the rain and they all go drafting from side to side until the metal drum starts playing and that’s when the trash starts to come. We started with small trash for the weaker sounds and for the “boom’s” we used larger ones.
Some sounds were glass bottle noises, plastic, metal sounds and we tried matching that. When the faster beats from the drums starts that’s when the bigger trash comes in until everything is covered and has reached the camera.
For the next day we will be editing the video in Adobe Premiere.

Me and Marcello started editing the images on Adobe Premiere according to the sound. It wasn’t that hard to do it because we had already counted how many beats and how many photos we would use to match the beats. We would only have to adjust how long each photo would be on the video. At first we were taking too long to adjust the length of each image and then dragging back to the last image and so on. Then we researched on google how could we put all the images together since we adjusted the images and they became all spreadly separated and it worked. This helped to take less time to make it. Then for the second part which is when the drum enters took the longest because it is faster and has more frames (images). The ending was easier even though it is a faster pace, we had chosen yesterday to take one photo per beat. Some images were different in colors than the most of them, they were lacking warm tones so I adjusted each image that had colder tones. Then we exported the video into two formats: mp4 for screen and mp4 for mobile.

While Marcello and I were working on the video, Julliet started working on the graphic score and Nat as well but from home.

We all had worked on the graphic scores individually before and in the morning we put them together. First Natalia suggested to use “spikes” to attatch the pages of our graphic score and make a back cover larger than the size of the pages to make a margin. Then Monique suggested us to use a harder material for the back cover because the vegetal papers are too thin and the booklet would be too slobby. So we went to the printing room and we used parana paper and covered with black paper. The pages were sewed with a black string and a thin parana paper strip to assure the work has a nice and clean finshing touch.

And Natalia also suggested we should prolong the last image on the video and Sol said it’d be better if our names were at the end of the video. And Marcello went to the pc lab to do that. I think the names weren’t necessary if we think of it as a video clip but since it is a college project I think it makes sense.

After lunch break we displayed the instruments and the graphic score on two tables together. So the sketchbooks would be placed on the right corner, the graphic score next to it and the whole other table filled with out instruments.

We also thought and brainstormed for the name of the band and song. We thought of “Useless”, “The Useless”, “Useless Things” inspired on the TED Talks video Sol showed us in the morning because we only used useless objects to make the instruments. We had already decided how it would work: each sound in the music would have its own music sheet on a vegetal paper to put them together so it can be seen altogether or separatedly. The vegetal paper is an A3 size and we divided the timing by 10s is equal as 7cm of the paper, so 1mm would be 1sec of the song.

So I took notes of when each time the rain maker and the rattle played and how long it was played. I didn’t plan a lot to make the graphic image of each sound but it was intentional since the music is freestyle. Our reference for the graphic score was from the artist and urban designer Nurhan Gokturk who made a series of drawings inspired by the composer John Cage. He used mixed media like paint and marker, thin linds and big spots with colourful paint. How did I personally contribute to the success of my team? Why am I happy with my contribution?

I contributed a lot with ideas, suggestions and prompts. I think the ideas could be better developed if the whole team had suggested more ideas or researched more (including myself). The process of making the sound started by Natalia who thought of recording separately and then putting together in the software. But I thought it was dangerous to do that because I thought we should have at least some songs played together. And that’s what we did. We recorded some freestyle play and we enjoyed one of the songs. And we stuck to it and then we played each instrument individually. And for the concept of the work and animation it was my suggestion. The team liked it but I felt like they could have given more ideas, I felt like I was “bossing around” on the ideas but I made sure everyone agreed and I listened to them too. Then for the editing I was the one editing the song in adobe premiere and the animation as well. Marcello helped A LOT with the animation and always showed himself interested and available to do anything. The graphic score was also my idea of doing it in a more freestyle way (just like we did in the song) and each one choosing a material to work with on the paper. The layering with vegetal paper was Natalia’s suggestion and we all thought it made lots of sense.

What feedback did the group receive and what can I learn from this feedback? How will I use this feedback to improve my future work?

The feedback was very positive from our colleagues. They liked the idea of how we represented pollution because of the trash and how we related to our musical instruments and the song. We also heard that we could have experimented more on the graphic score and the material we used could be more transparent. But some of them said that the vegetal paper was a better idea. César liked the relation between the instruments, songs and the graphic score because they all relate to layers and mounting on top of it all.

It helped me define what path to follow with my ideas.

When illustrating, what are the important considerations?

First, the material being used and then the orientation of the paper. The lighting and perspective is key to start illustrating, the position of objects. The narrative and relationship between each element as well.

What did you learn from the drawing exercises in the studio today?

I learned I can improve my abilities of illustrating with lighting and perspective and how that influences the illustration.

And the first one I had in mind was the slot machine when I was going through Pinterest and saw an illustration by Laura Callaghan and it was a slot machine. I thought I could draw the earth, an explosion and a bomb for the elements the slot machine has when played. But when I tried doing it didn’t look interesting, it looked boring and I want something more detailed and colourful.
Then I had a talk with Monique and she suggested me to keep with the idea and try to draw more objects and see if something came up if I put them together.
Although her feedback gave me more confidence I still think it’s not the best idea I could have.
Then I started trying to remember the animations or movies about the end of the world and Gravity Falls came straight to my mind. It’s an animated tv serie about two twin brothers spending their summer vacation on their gruncle’s shack in a mysterious place called Gravity Falls. And this place is controlled by paranormal forces with many mysteries unveiled. On the last episodes the Weirdmaggedon happens which is the end controlled by Bill Cypher and surreal creepy monsters taking over Gravity Falls and many weird freak things happen.
I watched these last episodes to remember exactly what happens and I payed a lot of attention to every single detail. They gave me an idea of making the end of the world because a volcano exploded something that transforms everyone into candy. The place was interesting and I had never seen illustrations or art in that processing with codes way. I don’t think I would choose to make a coded rule illustration or pattern but I might use rules to develop something on the paper. I think the outcomes would come out all different and there are endless chances.

We had to make three squares beside the other. Between the first two there would be the plus sign and then between the second and last square the equal sign, to sum up one idea and a type of number generator or drawing options. That way would be easier to visualize more ideas.
I had some ideas but not quite something I would LOVE to work with:

Combine one salty food with one sweet food and give to people and take a photo of their reaction while tasting it. The selection of the food would be by drawing out papers in a bag or if I make a game maybe cards;
Paint the paws of a cat and place him/her on a big paper while pointing the laser at strategic points on the paper. The outcome would be a painting made by cats.

She presented some of her works and they are very interesting installations. The references were all about processing and she predented many variations of the game of life. Then afterwards we had to make a rule to follow a processing on the paper.
Our rules started with colours and we added directions and amount of squares for each colour. The rules are:

Start at making gray square in the middle of the grid paper;
Choose a direction (up, down, left or right) and colour the amount of swuares that the colour indicates;
You can’t repeat the direction/colour until you have completed one round (all four directions);
If the chosen direction meets squares that have already been coloured, you can skip the coloured ones and continue on the chosen direction by skipping them;
Every ten rounds you have to rotate the paper.

Up: colour 4 green squares
Down: colour 6 red squares
Left: colour 3 blue squares
Right: colour 8 yellow squares

When we started playing we had ruled less squares to colour and the proportion between each amount of squares were not that different so the outcome wasn’t that interesting, then we decided to start over with those numbers (3, 4, 6, 8).
Then Eleanor suggested us to bring some rule that would change every x rounds. So we decided that we could rotate the paper every ten rounds.

I really enjoyed watching Eleanor’s presentation and the activity we did to explore processing and rules. And that made me want to make one for this brief, but I think I’m gonna stick to the ideas of a poem or a board game.

Generating ideas

Yesterday I did some researches on drawing board games but I wanted to do something different than Pictionary or the others I found. I would like to make a game that explores creativity.

But I also thought of poems and the inspiration came from the Diamonde poem which the verses altogether forms the diamond shape and it is made by words only, no prepositions or words that connect to each other.

Monique kindly suggested me to go further on the idea of the poem and to develop the drawing game too.

The drawing game has one notebook and two sets of cards. You have to draw one card from each of the sets and make a single drawing putting the two words together.

It doesn’t need to be a board game, but I thought of something interactive and of chances (for artists mostly) as a creativity activity.
Then I researched more about poem games and the rules of the Dadaist poem that Tristan Tzara developed gave me an idea for the drawing game. I could make two sets of cards that would be two different group of words and the player would have to draw one card from each set per time. So, suppose the player draws “door” and “celebrity” they would have to draw one single drawing combining both words.

Then I started cutting each one of them and the pattern on the back looks really nice, I liked it a lot.
Then for the board I thought of using parana paper, but first I glued a yellow paper for the back and I didn’t think the finishing looked good. So Yasmin told me about a cardboard paper that is covered in white paper already, which is in the printing room. And it worked perfectly and I used double tape instead of liquid glue because I was afraid it wouldn’t work.

I thought of using the parana paper to make the box but I used the other one instead, the same for the board. I did only the bottom part but I couldn’t think of anything to cover without looking unprofessional. I think that a box covered with paper would not help the game itself to look better. I also added the Start and Finish points which I made on the paper, took a phito and edited on photoshop.

For the back of the cards I didn’t know if it would be only the yellow colour or a pattern or an illustration. I thought that it could be a pattern since I had learned before how to make it.
I chose the yellow for a background and the illustrations in black and white just like on the board. First I arranged them on an A4 file without touching the edges. Then I used the rulers to grid it into 4 equal parts and cut half of it in vertical and then traded places of each half. Then after that I cut the image in half again but horizontally and traded places of these halves. The edges were in the middle and there were some blank spaces so I filled them in with more of those illustrations. I reduced the whole image to the size of a 1/4 of the page and filled the four parts with the whole image. And that’s how I made this repeat pattern.

For the instructions, I researched on some game rules and the one I got the bases from was Monopoly. After writing it I thought of making it handwritten but I wasn’t sure if it would be too overwhelming because instructions need to be fully understanding and I thought a digital font would be better. But Monique suggested me to do that before I even said something.

By the end of the day I had sent the files to the printer.

I used the magic wand and the selection tool to eliminate the white blank parts among the writings. Then I made a new A4 file to arrange the cards for print and the colour I chose for the frame was yellow (I don’t know exactly why I chose yellow but I do know I would want to use the same colour scheme from The End of the World project).
And for the illustrations I used the same method for the cards. I illustrated some symbols on the white paper, but instead of scanning which would take a lot of time because the paper I used was A2 size and it would cost money as well, I used my phone to take pictures of the drawings and on photoshop I eliminated the white parts and I left only the black lines. Then I placed the symbols on the right corner of each card. Some of the texts were taking the space I would place the illustrations so I used the lasso tool and rearranged some texts so it would have space for the symbols.
The decision on each symbol was to not make a cliche drawing. For example, the one that is about stalking on Instagram I made a pair of eyes with a pair of shades as if it is spying on something. And some others I tried making the literal situation like the “spill the tea” I drew a cup of tea spilling tea.
For the board I made another one with more spaces and then I coloured it on photoshop as well with the same method I used with the others and the colours I got from the end of the world project.
The board was too boring and I wanted it to look fun. So I added the same illustrations from the cards so it could also have a connection between the board and cards. When I placed them on the board I really liked how it turned out black and white. So I went back on the last projects and I thought of making a game about procrastination. And because I wanted to make board games (board games are the ones I have the most fun when playing) I decided to make one on this theme.
So I started planning how the rules could be. I got my board games to explore the items they contain and I also had researched some others. The one I was inspired by the most was Monopoly. And the fun part is when you draw cards that either help you win money or lose it and my game is a collector Coke themed Monopoly, so the cards are all related to Coke history. So I had this idea of having two kinds of cards: the ones that would help and the ones that wouldn’t. And each one would be a situation that happens to us when we’re procrastinating.
I chose to make the cards with handwritten font just like my Proxrastination Zine and that there would be illustration on them.
For the board I tried making a sketch which I liked but it could get better. It was too small without that many spaces, the game would end too fast.
So, by the end of the day I had all the cards done in hand and the prototype of the board all scanned already.

Medal: very exciting game

Michael said he feels very excited to play this game. The colours and design are very fun and what’s interesting is that the game gives a different perception of procrastination because of the cards with humor and well detailed with little things along the journey of a procrastination. It makes us realise things we usually don’t when we’re struggling with it.

Mission: management of time (video)
I think I always struggle with starting something. Maybe it’s lack of confidence and perfeccionism. And most of the time that’s why I take so long to start doing a great idea. This project and the last one took me a week to really like an idea and start doing it. And then consequently I didn’t manage the time properly so I could have time to make the video. I also wouldn’t like to make a video that wasn’t given that much effort.
Another relevant feedback I received from Michael was about the Indtructions design, he suggested the same as Monique said about the font being handwritten and I will definitely do that for the next two weeks.

The number of the FPS would have to be ridiculously high and I chose 666 because the name Armaggedon is because of a mountain in the old Jerusalem which is related to the biblical Apocalypse, so I thought it would be fun to play with these numbers.

And the second one I would like to put the astronaut outfit from the movie Armaggedon that is very classic and orange, people that watched this movie would remember.
To make it more modern I thought of putting them to sell as something trendy and a department store would represent it very well since all trendy things end up everywhere for the average economocal public, like the deparment stores out there. A good example is Forever 21 that is in many different countries now around the world. But then I remembered that I need to do the idea or at least try and start it. So I began with that idea of the world becoming candy and everybody eating each other up. The story begins with a volcano exploding a bright glittery slime and reaching the city transforming every single alive being into a candy being.
I didn’t like the outcome that much so I went for the other idea which was about objects. The first one I had done was the slot machine but I also thought it wasn’t that good. Then I went back to Gravity Falls end of the world which is an Armaggedon with paranormal force and this reminded me of thatlate 90s movie Armaggedon that the world is about to be destroyed by a meteor coming to Earth. Then I thought of making a sunscreen lotion for the end of the world which would be a very high FPS because of the explosion from the meteor. So I decided to make situations and adapted objects that would exist only if this happened.

Cuphead was very inspired by the 1930s animations from Disney and Flescher studios and everything is very surreal. Gravity Falls is a more modern illustration but still paranormal and surreal.
I got some candies and I tried to give them life by adding face features, arms and legs. But I used the ones I had and I planned to use the same colours on all of them.
So I started with the orange because I was a hundred porcent sure it would be exactly like in the movie and I coloured only orange things in all four illustrations. Then I moved on to green and so on. But it was hard because there are somr objects that are not usually any of the colours I had so I needed to plan every colour for every tiny thing because I didn’t want for any colour to stand out.
Then I got stuck when it got to the part of the mountains, I didn’t have the brown colour and none of the previous illustrations had this colour as well. I went to the only opened place that would have stationary selling on a Sunday: the mall. They only had those markers for kids and I decided to research on that. I remembered of Robin Eisenberg who is an illustrator that illustrates girls doing personal daily stuff in another planet and her colour pallet included a lot of purple, pink, lilac and black. So I decided to colour the mountains in the back purple and the others a pinkish red I have. It turned out better than I expected. I really loved Michael's pieces of numbers he kept doing through the years and it really opened up my mind about re-doing a project. I thought it would have to be something really big to make a difference from the previous project. I really enjoyed how Michael played with the subjects and surfaces of his works but still the same work only changing slightly.

SCAMP activity

What have I learned by planning ahead and writing a rationale before the beginning of the project?
I’ve learned to organise my time better by dividing “big” tasks into smaller ones. This is a more realistic action plan and I know I can achieve them. Planning ahead also helps me to preview what can go wrong and the solutions I might have to deal with.
It is also important for us to take advantage of time and do not waste it.

What have I realised by rewriting my project brief?
I’ve realised I can make a better research for the rules to make it perfectly functional to be played.

Have my aims and objectives become clearer as a result of writing and action plan?
Yes, indeed. It is really important for me to organise time by writing down every single task I sign myself to do.

What happened when I used the SCAMPER technique? Did it help to generate ideas?

For this project I chose a place from EBAC that nobody chose, the restroom. I want to give a surreal and weird thing to it. Maybe making collages with the images and adding weird things onto it, or changing the background... That is my intention with the project so far. But I talked to Monique and she suggested something different than this idea, less like an illustration and more like changing the environment by adding something or creating something out of it.
So I chose the class window, the one next to the sink. It looks nice because it is a square shape and again I thought of changing the scenario behind the window and putting weird situations there.

In the afternoon, Fredy and I started discussing about what we will print at Riso Tropical. He made some distorted perspective of EBAC’s building and I really liked one that looks like the building is being sucked from a small hole.
We chose this illustration and vectorized it in photoshop. And we wanted to give a psycho pattern to it and we looked up and we chose a wavy black and white striped image and attatched to the illustration. It was hard to do it because we used a photo since none of us could draw in the photoshop or illustratir. I changed the background of the walls and the floor. The walls I added a sky image and the floor a grass one. I thought it would be playful because that is usually a dog's scenario to poop or pee. I still don't know what I want to do but the talk with Ana was great. I showed her the toilet and the cactus illustration and the photoshop collage, and she showed me some surreal style references and encouraged me to do an illustration serie as it is my chosen pathway. The animation Ana showed me had some Tim Burton references and it sounded like a great idea to continue working with EBAC's toilet.

She suggested me to change the envelopes for the zine and The collector project to an easier one to get the content inside.

The colouring of the illustrations was in RGB and I needed to make it brighter for the prints, I tried enhancing brightness and contrast and I changed the levels... but nothing worked, none of the adjustments were similar to the RGB.

The prints didn’t have the colours I was expecting but right now there isn’t much time left to re-edit the colours. I glued them on the sheet to add to the portfolio and three other copies for the crit tomorrow.

Portfolio due
I started the day writing the personal statement and and I asked my friends how they did on theirs and they let me read them. It helped me to guide me on what I needed to write.
I wrote a personal but carefully written text but there were some things that didn’t need to be there and maybe even getting in the way for a successfull letter. And that was pointed by Monique when she read my text and analyzed it. She gave me some notes that was really helpful and made me realise how simple it should be.
After I was glad with my personal statement I started focusing on the online portfolio because I needed to edit better for the mobile version of my website. So I changed the display of the works to a larger size and functionally simple.
It was only missing those final retouches and adding some illustrations from my drawing diary to the Sketchbook session on the menu. We went around the building to take pictures and measure and know the place and the people who work there. Then we had a discussion with everybody from our class to organise how many rooms and who would measure them.
The visit was very important for us to feel how the place is and the needs and also the space we are going to work on. It gave as a clearer view and notion to start designing.

Me and Gaia measured the "refeitorio" because we intend to work in this area of the building. We are thinking of very colourful illustration that fits all ages. I decided to try the photoshop collage idea on the paper as a drawing to see how it looks like. It wasn't easy to draw the perspective and I realise I need to practise that more because that is something I appreciate in illustrators works.
Although it is everything weird, I didn't want to give a childish look to them. So I started with the clouds, which could be very flat figures and rounded curves but I thought if I could get the closest to the real one without changing the style of the drawing, it would make it somehow more mature. For the portfolio I had all the prints already and if I like the final outcome of these illustrations I might put them on the portfolio.
I chose double faced tape to glue the prints on the A2 sheets and it worked fine, but I had a hard time deciding the order of the sheets. I think some of the sheets doesn't match the portfolio.
Glueing the images to the A2 sheets was really tiring because I had to cut everything and then put tape on them and then measure and finally glue. Those were long 5 hours.

Then later I started working on the illustrations for Surrounding Narratives. I decided to keep with the surreal illustration idea and I used the three out of four images I took from the restroom. The other one was from the trash bin but I thought it could be something to do after this project and the portfolio.
I decided to add sparks and water splash to the toilet to give the same sense of presence in the Tap illustration. It's running some mysterious shimmering and sparkly liquid from it. For the mirror one I thought it would be really fun to give the sensation that everything is melting when you look at the mirror and also some sparks left from the liquid in the sink. I liked how all the images are scenes of a very mysterious presence.

As Gaia and I are making the design for the dinner area, we thought creating food characters that wouldn't be childish like because there lives children and adolescents up to 17 years old.
The big problem is there isn't any rich space on the walls to design. There are many windows and doors that take up the space. We thought that for that we could use the ceiling as a part of the "canvas" as well. Maybe starting an illustration on the ceiling and continuing it on the wall.
I started drawing some fruits and vegetables that we had made a list before to organise which foods we each would draw. We started the day with a very nice lecture of Filipe Grimaldi and what I didn’t know before it was the importance of blocked letters when creating a font.
And painting the letters on the wall was great to feel how it is to do in a large scale and on a different surface as a wall.

I was sketching to warm up and Gaia told me she wasn’t that excited for the project so I suggested her for us to change the room of Casa do Pequeno Cidadão, then Bruna gave us the idea of designing all the doors. So we thought of doing the third floor doors which is the dorms floor. It reminded us of the Pixar animation movie Monsters Inc. and we thought of making patterns in bright colors on the doors and each one different than the other.
In the affernoon I sketched two ideas for the three doors. The first one I was thinking of drawing objects that are kind of the same shape that fits the doors. This could be fun and is also genderless, I think it dismiss the idea of being too childish as well because they are objects all ages (maybe older ages) use.
The fish inside the cup was an idea I got inspired by a videoclip of Kali Uchis after I thought of making a glass of water but it was too empty. The fish made a huge difference, now it looks more fun. Then I went on picking objects around the studio and I found a spray paint and the ice cream I had done before when I was warming up to draw.
Then I was scrolling down on Pinterest and there was a Jean Jullien illustration and I clicked on it. I was a face in an orange background and I immediately imagined that on a door. Jean Jullien has been an inspiration to my works, I love the colours and the light humor in his illustrations. I tried creating different faces to make the doors and it was hard to make it look like a certain type of person, to give a personality. I noticed the shape of the nose and eyes and also distance between them changes a lot.

Gaia: illustrations

Today Gaia and I started with the maquette by making the scale to cut out the pieces. We didn’t know how to calculate that so we found an online calculator and it made things a lot easier. The scale we chose was 1:4 but when I finished tracing the measurements to cut out the foam I realised it was too small. So I doubled all the measurements and it turned out to be a better size to vizualise the doors.
I cut out all the pieces and now is only missing the prints of the door to attach and then assemble the pieces.

While I built the maquette, Gaia was vectorizing the illustrations.

• How has your primary and secondary research on materials developed your designs?

The material we chose is vinyl because we know the project budget is not big so we thought printing on this material will be cheaper and easier than painting by hand since our illustrations has so many details.

• How can we improve our productivity in the final few days?

We split the tasks between us, so Gaia is finalizing the project on photoshop and I am making the maquete. Tomorrow we’ll be printing and assembling the parts of the maquete.

• How will our design improve the children’s environment? Why is this important to us?

It will definitely make their rooms more interesting and it will give more colours to this floor.

Then I added the doors frames as well and glued the parts of the maquette together. It takes a long time to dry but it's working.
Gaia was finishing illustrating the last illustration on photoshop but when we asked for help to export to illustrator as a vector, it didn't work. Eugenio helped us with that, but Gaia made the outlines and the colouring all in the same layer, so illustrator couldn't recognise the black lines. Then Gaia had to draw by hand again the illustrations and I vectorised it and coloured in Illustrator.

It's always hard to keep a colour palette on a series. This time I started with yellow and I went on combining other colours with it. I experimented with darker colours but it looked too shady and I wanted something more magical with fantasy. And I think pink, blue and purple went really well together in bright (?) pastel tones.
I kept changing which would be blue and purple because in the other illustrations they are not very strong colours, in this one the yellow stands out. But then in the others the yellow is not that present and I had some issues trying to fix this. In the final choice of colours I think the colour that stood out more is pink.

I only forgot to send the prints to put on the maquette but we went there with a laptop and we made the file right there and it worked fine.
Then we bought another foam paper to make the maquette's base and we put the prints of the doors on the maquette's doors.

In the afternoon I started updating the Reflective Journal and Research padlets and I organised what I need to do for the Assessment.

Given the time remaining are your action plans realistic?
What adjustments need to be made and why?
Yes, we had a different idea in the beginning of the project but we weren’t excited about it and time was running out already so we decided to design three doors of the dorms only, which is more realistic to our schedule.

With a day to go where can you make the most progress and what do you need to focus on at this stage?
Now we need to focus on the presentation to the client. What needs to be said and gather enough information for them. And most importantly have a convincing speech.

Having reached the final day of the project what do you think you have learnt from the way your design team member's work?

Gaia came with Dr. Suess illustrations references and I really liked the idea of drawing a surreal world and have it on the door. Then I suggested us to add an opened door on them as if we entered a new world through that door. We want to add some magic to their rooms’ entrance so they ger excited to have their bedrooms.
So we went to the mac lab to research the illustrations we would use as a reference to illustrate. We saved some of them on the cellphone to start sketching ideas.
I love The Lorax story that is about cotton trees and I wanted to create a tree or a plant that would be as different as that but still recognisable as a plant. Then I started thinking about fairy tales to look for a “crazy plant” reference and “João e o Pé de Feijão” came straight to my mind and I made a huge plant growing up to the sky. And the first sketch I did wasn’t interesting, I made a way made of stairs up to a castle on the background but I didn’t succeed with the staris, I guess I need to get better at perspective. And besides that, I did not like the illustration because ot was too empty and not fun, so I discarted this idea.

Today I started researching new ideas for new texts to make the cards. I saved the some non procrastination guides and some are infographics that helped me a lot to create the texts. But I still wasn’t very content with the bew texts, because it ends up being too repetitive or with similar situations.
I also watched some TED Talks about Procrastinating and this help me make the positive texts, I’m thinking there are too many about what happens than what needs to be done when being a procrastinator.
After choosing some texts that I sketched, I started with the illustrations for each text. I took photos of the texts and illustrations to edit and design the cards on photoshop.
I decided to keep the same colours and same pattern because I think the duration of this project is short and I know I won’t be able to achieve my expectations if I start changing the design of the game. I had never heard of this printing technique before. The colours are much brighter and compact on the paper. They only use two colours so yesterday we had to manage that on photoshop and we thought it was correct. Then the owner of Riso Tropical helped us with the negative/positive of our illustration on photoshop.
For the chosen colours which are pink and yellow, we saw many zines with different pairs of colours and the pink and yellow pleased us the most.
The final prints looked very pretty, they don’t look like printed from a printer but also not silkscreen because you can notice the ink is more fluid and is more absorved by the paper.

About the speech and presentation:
• Emphasize the two door (it estimulates imagination for the fantasy world inside a “magic” door) element and explain it;
• Artist references are irrelevant for the client;
• Mention that it might be a small change but it transforms the whole environment because of the colours and fantasy elements;

Meeting with client
We got a little anxious because we don't speak in public very well but we delivered all of the information we wanted to give.
The speech of the coordinators was really touching, they seemed to love our projects and they were very opened to go after partnerships to have the budget to make this happen.
I wasn't so excited because in my mind we weren't going to do it, but after all the presentations and talking to them made me change my perception of this project.
