Pirouette preparation

Pirouette preparation is important as it helps to achieve more turns. The technique required for pirouettes is similar across all three core techniques however, there are slight differences such as in ballet the pirouette is always done on a straight leg however for jazz and contemporary maybe performed on a fondu. Although the way pirouette should be performed is the same for all of them.

The technique...
For the arms in step 1 and 2, they should be at shoulder height, straight and within eye line. Whereas, in step 3 they should be slightly away from the body and curved this is so when moving from position 2 to 3 you can whip the arm into first, giving you more momentum to turn. The shoulders need to be back and down to open up the chest to allow for easier breathing in all steps.
The supporting leg should be directly under the hip, pulled up and engaged for steps 1and 3. The other leg should start out to 2nd straight and turned out. It should then move through to a deep 4th position in step 2 where the legs are diagonal to each other, not parallel. Being in a more open position allows you to give more power and better execution of the movement. In a pirouette the supporting leg should be on relevé straight or on fondu depending on the style, the other leg should be in a high passé turned in or out again depending on the style. The core should be engaged and the body pulled up to help maintain balance. The head should whip ensuring to spot the direction you are going. You should land a pirouette on a pilé to prevent the risk of injury.

Flat back
The first picture shows how the incorrect alignment for a flat back, this is because my back is curved, head dropped down making it out of line with my spine and I am swaying back on my legs. Through this incorrect posture it can cause damage to my spine and my knees.

In the second picture you can see that my back, head and arms are all in a straight line causing the flat position. Also from my hips to ankle it creates a straight line and I am not swayed back over the hip joint. Through having the correct alignment it means that I am working on my abdominal muscles, hamstrings and strength. this is because to hold the position my core needs to be engaged and legs straight and pulled up. This is then a transferrable skill between jazz and contemporary.

Jazz technique first position

At the start of the year I had the incorrect jazz first therefore had to work on getting out of my habit of this, to do this I would focus on where my hands where during exercises. Using the correct jazz first means that my arm alignments will be more elegant and look stronger, also it means when going to other positions it is easier to pass through to. The jazz first position should be hands and elbows in line with the shoulders. shoulders should be rotated back and down giving you a straight spine. This enables you to keep the correct alignment when moving through to other positions such as 2nd, as if I was to use left technique it would require me to lift my arms upward and out rather than straight out. The first position gives you the correct alignment to directly move your arms outwards and remain straight. Through having the correct arms it has helped with my overall posture when performing jazz.

Lateral T
In contemporary we use lateral Ts within exercises, in order for the exercise to help improve me, I am required to have the correct technique for a basic lateral T. In the 1st picture is what my lateral T was like at the start of the year. This is an incorrect alignment of a lateral T as shown in the 2nd picture, which is now, my heel should be turned out facing forwards, this is too help remain balanced and achieve a turn out on my lifted leg. Both legs should remain straight with the legs and core engaged in order to hold the position. My body is in a straight-line with my head and hip, my arms should also remain by my ears and no wider. Through being by my ears it also helps to keep balance.

My arms are required to be reaching both forward and backwards to give an elongation, whilst my back should be creating a open space. In the first picture I am not achieving this. Though my 2nd one is an improvement. However, I still need to work on getting my leg in the correct position and to pull up my back to give the arch.

Barre posture
In the 1st picture you can see that my alignment at the barre is incorrect as my back is arched causing my bum to stick out. My shoulders are forward and my legs and core are not engaged, causing a slouched position. I have worked on this through looking in the mirror and correcting my self. The 2nd image shows the correct alignment this is because my core is engaged, legs pulled up and straight, meaning my bum is tucked under. My back muscles are also engaged meaning that my shoulders are automatically rotated back to open my chest. This means my spine is straight and gives a good alignment at the barre as all my muscles are now working.

Grand battements incorrect
15/11/18
This is incorrect as with each battement I am sitting on my standing hip, which means that I am not completely pulled up my standing leg meaning, that I have no control and my kicks are weak. My back and core is also not engaged you can see this as my upper body moves with each kick. I am also not always finishing my battements in 5th position. When performing an allongé it should always be done with a head in this video it is not as clear.

Grand battements improved
23/01/19
In this video you can see that my upper body doesn't move as much and I am working on holding my core and having my back engaged in order to do this. I am also not leaning into the standing hip and my standing leg is pulled up and engaged, this means that I am able to control my leg. I also show the use of my head with allongé clearer and I am ensuring to end in 5th each time, whilst maintaining a good posture and strong arms.
