As we begin this year, I want to welcome you all to the Hillview Music Department.

There will be weekly announcements sent home and posted to the Hillview Music Padlet that will relate to specific classes and ensembles. Look for the sections that apply to your child's ensemble but feel free to read it all!

It is going to be a great year! I am setting up concerts this week and the Performance Calendar (see Padlet) will be more filled out by Friday. I am especially pleased that the new music director at M-A is excited to do a lot more collaborating with Hillview and La Entrada.

JAZZ BAND UPDATE

First meeting - Yes, it is tomorrow as an INFORMATIONAL MEETING starting at 7:35AM. It is NOT MANDATORY - in fact, I set it up thinking that the 6th Grad WEB event was beginning at 8:30. So, I will be at school from 7:30 on and you can stop by whenever you want and I am happy to answer any and all questions.

It is not for auditions or for playing through.

Thursday and Friday are going to be "play through" events where we will go over the audition music.

Auditions will start next week on Monday. Signups can be accessed through the Padlet

I see on the rosters that a lot of folks have already been signed up. This is both good/great(!) and "concerning."

PLEASE NOTE:

1. Everyone must audition and not everyone is guaranteed a spot. I will take only 4 keyboardists (you will rotate through mallets when not on keyboard), 3 guitarists and 3 drummers.

2. You MUST be enrolled in either the the band or orchestra. The only exception is for pianists and guitarists (and even pianists should be in band playing mallets in the percussion section..that way, you learn ensemble skills).

If you have questions - drop by the Music Room tomorrow morning before 10. I have meetings after that for the rest of the morning.

BEGINNING BAND AND STRINGS

I am so excited to have the opportunity to start such a large number of new music students. Tomorrow, I will be sending out a Google Form for you to fill out so I know what instrument you would like to play. We will begin next week.

Classes will meet once a week before school from 7:35-8:20AM.

Beginning Band will meet on Tuesday

Beginning Strings will meet on Thursday.

The Music Room is getting back up to speed and will be ready to welcome you all tomorrow.
I would like to ask everyone in band, orchestra and jazz band to fill out this FORM
For those in Modern Band, we will be discussing the class and options tomorrow!

Q & A
1. Do I need to bring my instrument to school TOMORROW (First Day)?
NO - these first few days are all nuts and bolts. If we are lucky, we will play on Friday.

2. How does the 6th Band/6th Orchestra schedule work?
You will alternate every other day with PE on an A/B Day Schedule. This first week, we will all be getting things settled with PE, so we will meet at the lunch shelter.

3. What about Jazz Band?
This week, we are doing play throughs of the audition material from 7:35 - 8:20 on Thursday and Friday. Auditions will begin next week. These are voluntary. Feel free to drop in and jam
The regular schedule will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:35-8:20 AM as soon as the audition process is completed.

4 What about Beginning Band and Beginning Strings?
These classes will start next week. It is CRITICAL that you fill out the survey so that I know how many method books to order and what instruments are going to be in the class.

5 I'm in the wrong class. What should I do?
Go to the office and ask the counselors to switch you. Not a problem.

6 I want to play a different instrument. Is this OK?
Yes, but let's chat. If it is a switch within an instrument family (clarinet to sax) it should be pretty easy. But if it's from violin to French Horn, then I might suggest either some private lessons or coming to the beginning band class for a while util you get the hang of it.

7. What happens once I can play well enough to move from Beginning into the regular ensemble?
Well, if you are in 6th grade, it is easy to bump you up at the Hexmester - or just keep doing both for extra support. For 7th/8th graders, it might be a bit more tricky but lets chat with the counselors about it.

8 I want to learn guitar
Sadly, the only Beginning guitar course is offered afterschool. Concert Band and String Orchestra method books do not have a beginning guitar component. If you can already read standard notation and know your chords, you can join an ensemble but I cannot accommodate beginners. Take John Jordan's afterschool Guitar class offered by the PTO.
