Im using the Testing Essentials as an instrument through-which kids can acquire the primary knowledge on a given GPS/AKS topic, and perform basic, unguided practice with that knowledge.
For example, here is a link to 'TV Nation.' Student will have to copy data points from posters onto notebooks, answer multiple choice questions, write paragraph utilizing primary sources.
This can be done at home. In class, first 15mins, verify that this task was completed via open notebook exam. Afterward, students can engage in a variety of enrichment activities.
These google docs can be completed in 20mins. My plan is to create such instruments through-out the year covering every topic on the GPS/AKS

I've been using e-class to make my test most of last semester, and second semester. However, after speaking to Mr. Williams and seeing how he creates his test through google docs, I decided to try it myself. I like this much better as it allows the students to have different options such as, matching, multiple choice, flask back questions, and DOK higher level questions which Kapic has helped me with as USA test prep has allowed me to get some of those types of questions. I am still working on it, but I am excited to try it out today.

New Deal Flyers/Presentations

I've assigned pairs of students in my classes New Deal Programs and had them create New Deal flyers outside of class and bring them in. They've had to present them to each other (not in front of the class) as a sort of jigsaw. I have split the class up in half and have each partner go to one side and try to sell their agency/program as the best. Students have to take notes on each program then answer questions on eClass. They also get to vote on the best flyer and presentation/sales pitch of the program for bonus points. I get to keep the best pieces of art to show for later projects. Assign it at the end of a class and have them bring it in as a project grade or two grades for the flyer and eClass portion. If students don't have partners show up, then they'll have to rotate between the two different sides of the room.

I have been assigning a different student each day to conduct the morning review. Being that the majority of my students are ESOL, this strategy requires my students to use their emerging speaking and listening skills. The students enjoy wearing the tear drop mic and using the clicker as they lead the review. They are required to ask follow up questions about each review topic before moving on. The students really enjoy seeing their friends "be the teacher" and are actually more engaged then when I do it.
