Author: S.E. Hinton
Published: April 24, 1967
Age Range: 6th-12th grade
Plot: A gang of teenagers are constantly rivaling with the teens of the opposite social class called the Socs. When Johnny and Ponyboy were being jumped by the Socs and they began to drown Pony, Johnny stabbed a Soc and now is wanted for murder. Johnny and Ponyboy have to run into hiding and change their look so that no one finds them. Some of the Greasers find who they really are, while others loose their way and come to horrible endings.
What issues does it present: The issues this books presents is first the conflict between social classes. Though all of the members of the book are white (Johnny is tanner than the rest but it never mentions an ethnicity) they come from two separate parts of town. It bring awareness to the lower class teens and how sometimes they will be lead down the wrong path even though they think they are doing what is best. You can tell their lower class because of the house they live in and the way they look. Greasers have the ripped jeans and leather jackets and slicked back hair. Whereas the Socs have the khakis and button down shirts and "clean" hair. Darry, Ponyboy's older brother, had to drop out of high school to take care of his brothers because their parents had died, so they live in a run down home and have to make money themselves to keep that place to live. Johnny sleeps on a couch in an empty lot, Dally sleeps above a bar that his friends own but has been locked up a few times. A lot of classic things that lower class would look like back when the author wrote this book.

Author: John Green
Published: March 3, 2005
Age Range: 9th-12th grade
Plot: A boy Miles decides to leave his home and school in Florida and head to a boarding school in Alabama. He meets his friends, the Colonel and Alaska. He went for a new start and new friends until a tragedy happens and it makes his new world come crashing down.
What issues does it present: This books brings awareness to the dangers of mental illness and alcohol abuse. Alaska throughout the book shows many signs of depression and anxiety. She also talks consistently drinks and talks about drinking even though she is only in high school. She needed stability and looked for that in her friends. Like in today's society, many people are so caught up in their own problems that they often don't see those cries for help. Miles was so caught up in liking Alaska, well, the idea of her, that he disregarded all of those cries.

Author: Khaled Hosseini
Published: May 29, 2003
Age Range: 10th grade and up
Plot: A young boy named Amir who is a well off boy in the city Kabul. He has a friend named Hassan who is also the son of their servant. Amir and Hassan take part in a kite running contest, and it is Amir's dream to win, Hassan being the friend he is, tries to help him. After a horrible tragedy, Hassan and his father must move, though no one wants them to. After years and years, Amir has to go back to his home town and face his past.
What issues does it present: This book covers many topics that I think should be talked about more. It goes over the difference of social class in this country. The way that Amir and his father were treated compared to Hassan and his father. It shows the struggles that children go through whether they are in upper class or lower-class, it shows how their innocence can be stripped from them at any second. This is something that I think should be talked about more. How these children have to go through horrible things and are faced with decisions that a child should not face.

Author: John Green
Published: January 10, 2012
Age Range: 7th - 12th grade
Plot: A girl named Hazel Grace who has Leukemia goes through her teenage years felling like an outcast. Finally when she listens to her mom about going to a support group, she meets a few new friends. Hazel will have to deal with her sickness, maintaining new friends and possibly a boyfriend, and cope with the lose of someone close to her.
What issues does it present: The main character has cancer and I have never read a book like this before. I feel as if no one will write a character like Hazel because they have never gone through it themselves. However, John Green has never been a teen girl with cancer and he did a great job. This book will show the real side of cancer and how it effects everyone around it.

Author: Kristiana Gregory
Published: 1997
Age Range: 5th-8th grade
Plot: This is the diary of a young girl who is on the Oregon trail with her family. It has entries for most days and talks about what is happening. Hattie Campbell discusses things in her diary everything that she sees and as time goes by, she writes less and less because of how hard things begin to come.
What issues does it present: This book talks about issues of again, the torment a child can go through. This book is meant for young kids, I read this in fifth grade, and it talks of death and food struggles and the things that this little girl sees and how it effects her. It is her diary so it has all of the insight that she is thinking. She asks all of these questions that cannot be answered and many kids probably have the same questions that they are too scared to ask. This brings up the issues of starvation and death.

Author: J.K. Rowling
Published: June 26, 1997
Age Range: 5th grade and up
Plot: This is about an 11 year old boy named Harry Potter who finds out that they he is a wizard. He goes to this amazing school to learn about witchcraft and wizardry. At school Harry runs into many new friends but encounters enemies he didn't even know he had. The boy who lived must face challenges both big and small at his new school.
What issues does it present: In this book it touches on many things. What I am going to talk most about is how the main character is an orphan. Not many books, at least not the ones I have read, have the main character be so young and already have such a hard past. His parents were killed and was sent to live with his mothers sister and brother in law and their child. He was forced to live underneath the stairs. Though this is an extreme case, many kids who are orphans do not get to see themselves in a book and Harry Potter is the boy who is praised for being the boy under the stairs.

Author: Angie Thomas
Published: February 28, 2017
Age Range: 9th-12th grade
Plot: A teen girl named Starr goes to a party and on the way home her and her friend are driving home they get pulled over. Her friend gets asked out of the car. He thinks he isn't in real trouble and goes to the window to make sure Starr is okay and the officer shoots him. Not just once but multiple times. Starr has to go back to her normal life and figure out what will happen next after her best friends death.
What issues does it present: This presents the issue of officers killing young black kids. There has been so many times where a black person has been stopped and questioned and shot while unarmed. This is a more modern book and raises so many awarenesses to modern day issues. 2018 is almost over and racism and stereotyping should have been long gone by now.

Author: Harper Lee
Published: July 11, 1960
Age Range: 8th-11th grade
Plot: In the 1930's a little girl that goes by the name Scout has a father named Atticus who is a lawyer hired to defend Tom Robinson, a black male who is accused of raping a white woman. This book shows the point of view of all the racist things going on from a six year old girl.
What issues does it present: The issue in this book is racism. There are many scenes in the book where the town obviously does not care what the evidence is, they want Tom dead. Atticus does not leave him and defends him against the agree towns members, but the hate then spreads to him. Because he is defending Tom, the towns members will call hateful names to Tom and Atticus and though it is hurtful, Atticus reminds his kids to always be kind, even though the world can be mean.
