Kazi Lhendup Dorjee was the leader of SNC. 

In April 1973 Sikkim Janta Congress merged with SNC.

In 1974 the first democratically elected government took office in Sikkim. In the first elections after the fall of the monarchy the party won 31 out of 32 seats.

After the merger of Sikkim with India 1975, Dorjee’s party merged with the Indian National Congress.

It demanded a democratic government as opposed monarch regime of Sikkim. 
In the first State Council elections in 1953, it had launched two candidates. None of them were elected. 
It also participated in the 1967 and 1979 elections. In 1979 legislative assembly elections the party had 2 candidates, who together got 85 votes. Putnam Bahadur khati got 68 votes (2.74%) and Dylan Dorjee got 17 votes (0.7%).
Both constituencies were reserved for Scheduled castes, the only 2 such constituencies in the state.
