Screening is the first step in any wastewater treatment operation. This step involves removing large floating and bio-degradable solids such as papers, plastics, containers, wood, and tins. We conducted this step by putting a netting trap over the grit chamber. The wastewater was then poured into the grit chamber where the netting caught some solids.

Grit Removal is the second step where sand and grit are removed. In the lab we mixed the mixture of "grit" quickly and then let the bigger parts of the grit settle to the bottom. Then we poured the water into the primary settling tank where the bigger piece of grit were left behind.

This third step is where the actual treatment begins. The velocity of the water flow in the tanks slows down which allows the heavy organic material, also known as sludge, to settle. In the lab we allowed the mixture in the primary settling tank sit so that the bigger pieces float to the top and the smaller bits settle at the bottom.

In the lab we added a mixture of dry sand and ENO's (These represent the tiny organisms) into the bioreactor to remove any dissolved nutrients. All the contents of this tank are then poured into the secondary settling tank.
