Hey everyone, my name is Carlos Hechavarria. I was born in cuba but i came to the United States at the age of 4 and was raised here in Miami. I've been living in the same neighborhood called "Flagami" ever since i can remember. This is where i call home. I am currently attending Miami dade, at the Padron Campus. I am working towards an AA degree in exercise science, which is something i am really passionate about. In the future i would like to be big in the fitness community. After college hopefully i can start a buisness of my own while doing something i like. What i am really chasing is the freedom to do the things i like and hopefully impact people in a positive way, that would be my defenition of success. Other then that i think it would be fun if i just share some random facts about me, starting with a good steak being my favorite food, i have a twin sister which is something unique that not everyone can say they have.

Reply Edit

Week 2: Discussion Climate gentrification

Watching this great imformative video, opened my eyes to the reality of whats going on in miami. I didn't know there was a such thing as climate genterification going on, i only ever heard of the normal gentrification. The fact that homestead is 2 to 3 feet above sea level compared to little hatii being 6-8 feet above sea level caught my attention. Another fact that caught my attention is that 22 percent of public housing in little hati is owned by a company, in comparison to the rest of miami which is just 6 percent. Thats 3 times as much. What spoke to me were the nice people in the video from their communitys that are suceptible to weather gentrification saying they have a beautiful community. I think its wrong to push these residents away from their homes in order to rebuild or destroy their house to give to other people of higher class that make more money, that is very wrong. we're pushing the people that made this city what it is, the locals away which is really wrong.

Reply Edit

After watching Adan Palerno's, story of sunest park here are my takeaways. Just like miami some parts of new york seems to be getting affected by gentrification. Its sad to see how in the begening of the video it showed the hispanic familys dancing having fun outside of their houses and then it shows how gentrification took that all away. It then goes into showing some parts of the narators life growing up, seeing his mom fight with the landlord, even taking him to court for some shady buisness, he saw his mom not give up and he wanted to do the same. He started helping his communites by painting the roofs of the buildings in his neighborhood to the color white to keep it cool, he also planted gardens on the roof so his community could become for sustainable. Lastly he went around mechanic shops to spread information on how to properly deal with waste and other important things. This opened my eyes to seeing if you really want something done, you can have it

Reply Edit

Hide 1 reply

The topic i choose was zero hunger, its so sad to think about the fact that we humans make enough food for all of us to eat comfortable, altough this fact is true, more the 800 million people go to sleep hungry on a daily basis. The root of this problem starts with the food waste we create, if we could fix that we should be fine for the years to come.
United Nations.

Goal 2:We all know that going to sleep hungry isn't the best feeling, but did you know that more than enough food is produced to feed the entire global population? Regardless of this fact, as many as 828 million people around the world still go hungry. After researching I have concluded that the 3 main causes of hunger are Poverty, food waste, and lack of food. Did you know Paradoxically, every year, roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption—approximately 1.3 billion tonnes—is lost or wasted.” If we just did a better job not wasting so much good edible food, i think this world issue can be resolved.

sources

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S030691921830318X

https://dergipark.org.tr/en/download/article-file/2390836

https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/jnsv/65/Supplement/65_S4/_article/-char/ja/

Reply Edit

Select: All None

Man was i wrong, i learned through some reaserch that its gonna become something prevelant. According to cleanenergy.orgTaller turbines and longer blades are capable of capturing more wind, which results in generating more electricity and reducing costs. In just five years, wind turbines have greatly evolved and are now more suitable for the Southeast.

https://cleanenergy.org/blog/wind-power-in-the-sunshine-state/

Reply Edit

I selected this topic of hunger because as humans i feel like the bare minnum for us is to have acess to food. Extreme weather is a driver of world hunger. As global temperatures and sea levels rise, the result is more heat waves, droughts, floods, cyclones and wildfires. Those conditions make it difficult for farmers to grow food and for the hungry to get i will it be impacted by climate change?

Water desalination

Hey everyone, as we all know the ocean is huge! The ocean covers over 70% of the surface of our planet. Altough With all this being true there are still certain places and people around the world that don't get their necessary amount of fresh water daily. These are usually the dryer places around the world. Think about a dessert. I think desalination of ocean water would be a great solution to provide fresh water to dry areas of the world becuase theres so much water out in the ocean that no negative effects will be the cause of using ocean water. There are two main techniques, you can boil the water, then catch the steam, leaving behind the salt. Or you can blast the water through filters that catch the salt but let the liquid through. This would create so much more available drinking water, I think its a step in the right direction and we should start as soon as possible.

Learning about this topic is very interesting and necessary. As someone who goes to the gym alot, youll often see me wearing my headphones listening to some loud music, so loud infact that on my health app it stated that my exposure to noise has been over capacity for a while. Further more i was very intrigued on what i could learn and boy did i learn a bunch. I did not know i can hurt my ears with street noise! Even less did i ever think i could hurt my ears by simply just eating my food in a chipotle. Moving on i will be taking the tips from the video and try to control the volume i am hearing things more often. Things like just putting the volume less on my music, moving away from loud areas to areas that are more quiet. Things like the app shown in the video that reads how loud something is can be pretty useful as well.

Class feedback

When i first got into this course i was excited to see my professor, how the class would be structured, and some of my peers and classmates. My initial reaction to this course was thinking it was a pretty intresting and fun class. I've never hated science in my life but i won't sit here and say its been my favorite class since i was little, with that being said i didnt want to make any assumptions on how this class would go for me so i just kept showing up to class and before you knew it i was learning and having fun in the process. My expirences in this course has been a great expirience, i say that because as a busy college student with little time to spear, i really appretiated my professor for not implemting home work as a part of the class, instead i am greatful that he pushed each and every last one of his students to work efficently and get everything done in class. I enjoyed this method of teaching and because of it i feel like i have learned quite a bit. The activites were never boring, they were fun activites that truly helped u learn about all sorts of things that has to do with physical science. I expected this to be just a regular boring science class but it was much more then that. I thank our proffesor for that. Lastly i feel like completeing the activites opened a new perspective when i think about science, now when i think about it i will think about it in a positive mind frame. I learned alot but what i truly enjoyed is that the information we were learning is very good and helpful information to know, and i appreciate that. It changed me as a [erson because now when i think of science instead of thinking "boring" ill be excited to learn something. In conclusion i feel like this was a great class and i definitley recommed this course to anyone, i gaurantee you will enjoy ur expierence.
