After Columbus arrived there In May 3, 1494 CE he took the native crops back to his homeland in Europe most likely back to Spain.The Taínos were farmers and fishers, and practiced intensive root crop cultivation in conucos, or little raised plots. Manioc was the main crop, but potatoes, beans, peanuts, peppers and other plants were also cultivated.

Christopher Columbus was the first outsider to sight the island and named it Santiago but in reality it was called Jamaica/Xaymaca.Columbus considered it to be “the fairest isle that eyes have beheld,” and many travelers still regard it as one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. Jamaica was the first country to introduce many plants like sugarcane,bananas,and citrus trees. The interior mountains and plateaus cover much of Jamaica’s length, and nearly half of the island’s surface is more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) above sea level.

Spanish colonists had virtually exterminated the aboriginal Taino people by the time the English invaded the island in 1655. The Spaniards themselves escaped the island or were expelled shortly afterward.The population of English settlers remained small, but they brought in vast numbers of African slaves to work the sugar estates. Today the population consists predominantly of the descendants of those slaves, with a small proportion of people of mixed African and European descent.
