Collaborative environments have been shown to increase engagement and understanding. Using strategies such as "Scribe Protocol" allow students to learn from each other instead of directly from the teacher. Environments where students are able to be social and gain ideas from multiple sources creates differentiation while maintaining an engaging environment.

When working in groups it is important to instill the idea of "responsibility to others", since it is a key feature of collaboration. Assigning partial objectives where each student is responsible for a certain portion of a project/assignment helps ensure that students will remain on task. When their peers are counting on them, they don't want to let them down.

Oftentimes students only make partial errors when solving problems, or it might be in the wrong context. Mistakes can be discouraging for students, but framing them in the proper way can show that mistakes are a good thing in the learning process. One possible strategy could be comparing a wrong answer to a right answer on the whiteboard, and studying the difference in strategy. Talk about what the wrong answer got right, and other contexts where it may be a correct answer. It is important to point out rights and wrongs at an equal frequency when reviewing.

In a proper environment, students should get to the point where difficult problems are embraced while knowing that mistakes lead to understanding. Students should be encouraged to explore their own avenues when introduced to new topics so they can compare their own thinking to already established concepts. This allows them to form their own unique understanding while also encouraging learning from mistakes.
