Her bravery to be unapologetically herself and her physical strength is what I feel I share most in common with her.  It is so empowering to see my body type and athletic strength represented in a superhero and her intelligence be a part of how her strength shines through. Thunder's pride in her work and the energy she puts in fighting for what she believes in gets me fired up! Growing up, my favorite superhero was always wolverine. I've always been a sucker for a good coming of age story, and wolverine's story is a long one. He goes through so many challenges and changes throughout his life and the ability to adapt is a quality I think is very important. I must have watched something with Batman or Cat Woman a few times, because I know that they exist, but that was it. 

So, who else could I consider a superhero? I'd go with Mary Poppins for a few reasons: 1. She opens her umbrella and flies wherever she needs to go - how environmentally friendly is this? 2. You'd think that she conforms with the system surrounding her, yet she uses her privilege to access it and dismantle it from the inside … OK, maybe it’s a stretch, but growing up I would have loved a Mary Poppins in my family telling my dad to slow down and spend more time with us.  One should work to live, perhaps not live to work. 3. Not sure if it was her presence that would make people laugh until they would fly up to the ceiling, but I have incredible memories of me and my sister laughing until our bellies hurt. And when life gets very tough, a person that can make you burst into a belly lough truly is a super hero.

She taught me to be unapologetically me, and she is someone in the real world to look up to for inspiration! The hero I've chosen today is Autumn Peltier a young Anishanaabekwe and water advocate from Wiikwemkoong First Nation on Manitoulin Island, ON. In 2018, at the age of 13, Autumn addressed world leaders at the UN General Assembly on the issue of water protection, and then again made headlines in 2019 when she confronted Justin Trudeau on his support of the pipelines. Autumns work and advocacy is inspired by her great aunt, Josephine Mandamin, who has since passed, but was well known for her water walks and advocacy, and worked with our own Mi'kmaw Grandmothers in their efforts to honor and project our water. 

For me, Autumn is a hero because against all odds she is walking in the footsteps of her ancestors and using her voice and power to stand up for the land and water. Autumn is a vision of what I wish all of our youth had the opportunity and support to do if they so choose it. To me, Ruth Bader Ginsburg demonstrates these qualities. As the second female supreme court justice in the US, she stood up against misogyny and patriarchy. Growing up my favorite super heroine was She-ra and I really enjoyed the series She-ra and the Princesses of Power! She-ra was known for her incredible physical strength but what I admire most about her was her empathic understanding ways. She-ra was considered nonviolent and tended to rely on her intelligence when facing her opponents which to me shows a great deal of control especially when considering her physical strength and abilities.
