Perhaps mirroring my own life, the faces I created continuously echoed this longing I felt. When asked to choose a topic for my sustained investigation, I looked at my portfolio and saw all these longing eyes tracking me, and I had this feeling that those eyes aren't what I’m feeling anymore. I feel light and happy and successful and excited for the future instead of mindlessly waiting for it.  I set out with the goal of understanding how an eye looks when a person’s smiling. How the joy spreads across someone's face, touching every wrinkle and shadow. I used reference pictures and ballpoint pens in different colors to get the depth I wanted. After a page was filled with happy eyes, I worked on some open smiling mouths. During this I tried to think about how I could use color in my final piece. I lived about 5 years of my life in California, and the colors are different there, warmer and brighter. I wanted to incorporate the feeling of sun and warmth and happiness all onto a canvas. I used pinks and purples and reds to show the heat, and yellowy greens and blues to show the balance between cool and warm. The goal is to create a canvas that looks into the viewer, and pulls the joy out of them as well. The purpose of my art is to express myself in a way that lightens me, lifts the load of stress that weighs me down.
