He thought how it was cool that I put in my mom's maiden name but he thinks that I should put in at least a couple of icons that represent my family. I should also fix my colors on the thing to make it blend better.

I personally agreed with the fact that the first few were too simple. I therefore in my later drafts added and experimented with the leaves on the side as well as the stars on the banners. I don't like too many colors, but I added a few more to the crests in the later drafts to add to the effect.

Above is my final chosen design for my family crest. I'll explain all it's features in the following section. The top name Wiitala is my mom's maiden name and obviously the names of a lot of people on her side of the family. We're very close with her side, so that name is still super important. It is also a Finnish name, which is the largest part of my ancestry that I know of. For that reason, the blue cross in the shield to the left ish side represents the cross on the Finnish flag. Furthermore, it represents our family's unique scandinavian traits, like blond hair and blue eyes and easy sunburns. The green, white, and orange in the shield represents the other largest known portion of my ancestry, which is Irish. While we don't know of any current family members living in Ireland like we do in Finland, it is still a very important part of our culture. The four stars represent the four of us in my immediate family, and the red in the stars honors my ancestors who have fought in wars from World War II all the way back to the Revolutionary War. Finally, the leaves on the sides with the brown reflects my dad's side's roots in farming in Eastern Washington, a place with a lot of brown fields. All in all, this crest symbolizes many traits and features of my family and its heritage.
