I choose this theme because I think that as a society we forget to teach empathy and compassion for others. These books show children that everyone has struggles, even if we can't see them. They also place emphasis on putting yourself in someone else's shoes. The characters and storylines are easy for students at this age to identify with and the concepts are not overwhelming for the reader.

I spoke to a class of 4th graders about three funny picture books that fall under that category. Any age will be entertained by these books but slightly older audiences will truly "get" the humor. That's why I chose to do this for a 4th grade class. I chose this topic because I'm a little on the depraved side and I love to laugh. I wanted share this joy with some students. Also, it's fun to talk about books that have a more surprising and darker ending than just a "happy" one. I used iMovie to film this and had a lot of trouble with the automatic zoom in feature that was built in to the program. Focus: High-interest books that will appeal to boys ages 9-12 who may be reluctant to read and/or engage in series books (beyond  DOWK  and such). 
Audience: As a former 6th grade teacher, I chose to focus on an audience that was often difficult to movtivate with reading ...my boys! I chose several different books with themes that have broad appeal .  The levels vary to compensate for different reading levels and while targeted towards boys, the books have a broad appeal. The video is intended for use by teachers and students in a wide variety of settings. Therefore, I used the title Books for Boys but did explicitly mention that goal in the introduction. Theme/Topic: An exploration of the Fantasy genre.

Audience: Children ages 8-11 and/or young fantasy lovers!

I chose this topic as a way to try to engage reluctant readers and encourage reading for fun! Fantasy is such a broad genre that creating a whole program around it was super easy and seemed to have a little something for everyone. It's also (in my opinion) the most fun so it seemed like the best one to focus on to try to entice those reluctant readers. Fantasy books also encourages creativity and imagination within children, as well as enhances vocabulary. I did a summer reading program to help readers maintain their reading skills during a time when school is not in session. This program is designed to be fully remote but I've also included a instructions for an alternative, in-person version for families without internet access.

Purpose: Students in grades 3-5 start showing an interest in topics outside themselves and show a lot of interest in injustices to groups of people. A lot of 3rd-5th graders also show confusion in what Abe Lincoln and MLK did. When asked they will say that they both freed the slaves. One of my purposes is to help clear up that confusion and another is to have the students exposed to literature that introduces some of the hardships and injustices that African Americans faced during the Jim Crow Era.

I chose this topic because I thought that it would be an interesting thing to show children. I thought that different types of multicultural fairy tales would be a good way to learn about other cultures and how they are not that different from the stories and ideas that these readers know from other stories and cultures that they know. I also wanted to represent different cultures and countries in my three book talks, which I did by showing Vietnamese, Caribbean, and ancient Mayan cultures. I hope that these three books would be interesting for my readers and patrons, just as I thought they were interesting as I read and talked about them.

I felt like it was a topic that is relatable to students and  I want them to see that we all encounter things that we do not want to do or don't feel confident doing because they are new to us. We may feel scared, shy, or nervous because they are unknown or unfamiliar to us. We  have a decision to make to face our fears and do things while we are afraid or remain afraid and never see what we can do. The characters in these books demonstrate courage. I wanted my books to represent a wide variety of students and identities. My audience was every child because this message could be applied to not just girls but to anyone who is told that they can't do something. I remember when I was little there were very few strong female characters who weren't shy (like me) or who were bossy, or sassy, or whatever adjective you would use to describe a strong willed female child like myself. Now there are so many more characters like this that aren't afraid to assert themselves and be proud of who they are. I think it is important to highlight identities that have often been left out in literature.
