There are over 83 different species in this family. One of the diseases from this virus is smallpox. This disease is caused by the variola virus. It is a very contagious and deadly virus. The fatality rate of this disease is around 30 percent. You can acquire it by breathing in air from an infected person sneezing or coughing. You can also become infected with smallpox by sharing bedding or other  personal items with those people or by coming into contact with their bodily fluids. Symptoms of smallpox include but are not limited to fever, chills, body aches, vomiting and rashes on the face, hands or torso. These rashes then cause blisters on the skin and often scabs as they begin to dry. The treatment of smallpox is more about controlling the symptoms rather than curing the disease because smallpox currently has no cure. Drinking lots of fluids to prevent dehydration and taking acetaminophen is often recommended for treatment in cases of smallpox. Prevention of smallpox comes in the form of the smallpox vaccine. This vaccine was actually the first one to be developed for a contagious disease and was discovered in 1796. Anyone who comes into contact with this virus is subject to acquire smallpox.
