For St Irenaeus, salvation is part of God’s plan for human beings. All humans were affected by the rejection of the will of God, shown when Adam and Eve at the fruit of the tree. It was Jesus’ total acceptance of the will of God, most perfectly shown in the tree of the cross, that saved humanity from the effects of sin.

This salvation metaphor makes good use of the parallels between Adam and Jesus, particularly in the symbols of the two trees.Just as humans were lost by eating the fruit of a tree, they were saved by another tree.

Jesus was totally obedient to the will of God, in contrast to Adam who disobeyed God. Through his obedience, Jesus saved all people who accepted the will of God.

It helps believers to value how their own sinfulness is a rejection of God, but the supreme acceptance of the will of God, shown by Jesus, outweighs all human sinfulness.
