She then guides, protects, and fights alongside him and Telemachus. She guides them through their journey through manhood, and Odysseus' journey back home. She praises his use of trickery and deception. "Jason [another hero from the epic] benefited from Athena’s resourcefulness," (Cartwright) when she advised him to construct a large ship that could carry his name through fame.
