Nenny and Esperanza are outside talking about different names and about the clouds. When Nenny relates the clouds into their discussion about how the cumulus, they have a discussion about their favorite clouds and point out each one to be similar to their family members or friends. The clouds have similar characteristics to their family members and friends and so they talked a lot about each character traits. This discussion helps inform the reader of new characters and their personal traits.

Sandra Cisneros uses direct & indirect characterization in this passage. The main character, Esperanza, describes herself as fat and ugly on pages 36-37, and this tells the reader that she has self-esteem issues or kids at school make fun of her looks. “Esperanza’s fat face, that’s who. Looks like Esperanza’s ugly face when she comes to school in the morning.” Cisneros also uses indirect characterization when talking about Rachel. “Cumulus are cute, Rachel says. She would say something like that.” This shows the reader that Rachel has a quirky personality according to Esperanza’s point of view.
Sandra Cisneros uses repetition to emphasize an important section of the book. She uses “Cumulus” multiple times to let the reader acknowledge that Esperanza, Nenny, and their cousins made this certain kind of cloud an emphasis to elaborate on.

In this passage, I can see a theme of self-doubt. The characters criticize themselves a lot and do not have a good self image. They have childish arguments and insult each other's mothers. This shows the reader that it's hard for Esperanza to make friends because it always ends up with fights or even more insecurities.
