The need to breathe: How to develop urgency in the classroom

"Urgency is the spark of energy students need to engage in the difficult task of acquiring knowledge and skills."
Urgency starts with the teacher and empowers students to WANT to learn intrinsically. The learning environment encouraged by the teacher will then promote a sense of urgency with the students to their learning.
"If you want great knowledge, you must want it as badly as you [want] to breathe"
Learning must be relevant by connecting learning to other subjects, with the opportunities to create realistic products and presenting them outside of class, bringing in experts and using different methods.

- High Impact Engagement - Students have to be in charge of setting goals, making choices, reading, writing in order to be actively engaged. Achievement data shows that this is move effective with a higher yield.
- Lower Yield Practices - competing worksheets, engaging in oral turn taking, responding orally, engaging in listening, engaging in off task behaviours
- Observation data asks "Is this student engaged in an activity of sufficient impact to increase the learning outcome?" Are the students closing gaps in their learning achievement? Do they realise time is short? Are teachers engaging students in authentic and relevant learning experiences? Are teachers conveying the messages that what we are learning in important and urgent? Do teachers attitude and demeanor say that what we are learning is important and it needs to be done quickly?
- Sense of urgency in the classroom makes learning relevant, make it connect with other subjects, gives students to opportunity to create products from their learning, gives students the opportunity to solve real life problems using different methods rather then different levels of complication. It also gives students the opportunity to present their knowledge out of class.
- Teachers need to model how to see and feel the need for change in order to get rid of complacency. We need to believe in a future that has no data to support it. We have to see all students capable of achieving. We have to have the desire to have a greater impact on student learning. We need to lead changes and develop the skills necessary to accomplish learning for all

Often it is the environment we create - is that engaging. It is also the tasks that we assign - do the students actually need to do the task? What do they gain out of completing the task?
The pace of the lesson is also important to student engagement and sense of urgency. Teachers often teach too long and say too much. Pick up the pace, shorten time frames, decrease teacher talk and provide challenge!

To get them to understand why they are learning these things. It's not learning just for the sake of learning - it's preperation for real-life problems. It teaches them to problem-solve, because we have built the toolbox that teaches them to give their best at all times in order to get work done appropriately, first time. Not to dilly dally, but to take learning seriously.

A sense of urgency means: making the most of the time we have available. We should be well prepared through planning and resourcing for our classroom. In the classroom we need to ensure good time management in our lessons so that we can be making the most of the time available. The classroom should be led in a way that allows the children to know the routines and procedures so that no time is wasted in waiting for instructions or uncertainty of where they should be.
