We call this mankind apathy and they show empathy to those in need when really they don’t care and don’t realise how privileged they are living in a conflict free country. 
The quote “solutions slop in trays beneath his hands, which did not tremble then though seem to now.” This quote shows how traumatising it is to see the horrors of war and push your emotion behind you because it’s your job. The phrase ‘ solutions slop in trays’ resemble not only the photos getting processed but the slopping lifeless bodies of the innocent victims. The verb tremble shows that the gruesome images you see while doing this job can scar you for life with ptsd and anxiety.

We know this because in the second paragraph she uses the phrase “Belfast. Beruit. Phnom Penh. All flesh is grass.” The is an example of plosive mimics they represent the short sounding bombs that the war victims had to endure every day. This makes you empathise for them. The short phrase “All flesh is grass” informs you about how delicate their bodies are after the impact of war and violence.
Another way in which this is demonstrated is when she uses the quote “running children in a nightmare heat”. “Nightmare heat” includes a strong adjective of a nightmare which is hard to escape and go through. A nightmare is usually used in a negative and fearful manner which reflects back onto what they are experiencing.
