Their father could tell and Donatella immediately framed Scarlett for the doing, of course their father was furious so he struck his palm connecting it to Scarlett's face. The understanding of these two is how after their mother died, their father had become more agressive and strict when applying rules, often leaving marks if not followed on either one of them.

The context behind this quote explains how Scarlett, who is the main character of this book has lots of marks left behind by her father. This happened while Julian, one of the side characters was changing and Scarlett had noticed he had many marks and scars that look like slits from knives. Then she had thought that she correlated to him due to the scars that were left behind by her father, although deeper into the quote she explains that most were bruises instead. Essentially, she always covers them up to avoid people from seeing them, not even letting the maids dress her but dressing herself instead.

Julian, the guy who had sailed with Scarlett and now are journeying together and had to go through some extremes to get into the game. Julian had lied saying that Scarlett was his fiancé and they couldn't be apart due to their "marriage" that was upcoming. Although after the lie Scarlett was upset due to her arranged marriage set by her father, she had felt unfaithful so she had to apply some boundaries and rules. The rules were simple, they had to act like a couple when people were around, but after they were privately alone they could go back to being hateful towards each other.

This quote was said by a side character named Rupert. He had explained the rules and how everything will begin shortly, alll the riddles and clue will will lead the main character and her partner to the master of the game leading to the prize of "one wish being granted, anything they desire." They would have to travel to many different places and solve clues to be the first to meet Legend the host of the game that Scarlett was invited to, directly by him. So she is considered as a "special" guest and will gain more privileges due to it.
