An American scholar of Chicana feminism, cultural theory, and queer theory. Gloria Anzaldúa was a widely claimed Chicana writer and theorist on mestiza consciouness and the borderlands. Best known for her book Borderlands/LaFrontera: The New Mestiza.

Gloria was born in Raymondville, Texas on September 26, 1942. She is the oldest out of the four children Urbano Anzaldúa(dad) and Amelia Garcia(mom) had. Gloria lost her father at the age of 14 years old to a car accident, forcing her to work in the fields to help support her family.

Gloria Anzaldua grew up in Raymondville Texas. She worked in farms/ranches to help support her family. While working in the in the Valley she learned first hand about the discrimination against Mexican Americans. Later Gloria left the South Texas living in other parts of the state, in Indiana and California. Gloria's experiences growing up in borderlands influence her writing throughout her career.

Gloria graduated from Edinburg High School in 1962 then she attended Texas Woman's University for about a year but unfortunately she had to leave due to financial difficulties. She then returned home to enroll the Pan American University and she was able to graduate with a bachelor's degree in English in the 1968. She was able to teach at Pharr-San-Juan-Alamo Independent School District while she was also attending the University of Texas at Austin. Gloria received her master's degree in English in UT in the 1972 and later began to work towards getting her Ph.D. in comparative literature. In 1977 she moved to California where she obtain her Ph.D in Santa Cruz California.

Queer and Feminism Communities

Gloria was a great impact to the Queer community. Gloria was the first woman to actively discuss the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality, particularity within the Chicana experience. She wasn't afraid to openly discus her identity as a Chicana lesbian. She gave a voice to so many unheard stories of queerness within the intersection of race and ethnicity. Gloria provided so many platforms for other queer voices, especially to those women of color through her writing and activism.

Gloria Anzaldua was one of the leaders in the Chicano/Chicana Movement. In her book Borderlands/LaFrontera: The New Mestiza she encourage Chicanos to embrace their Multifaceted identities. Her writing was a testament of the struggles she faced and refused to stay silenced.
