One theory says that the statue was commissioned by the Medici family and it was to be placed in their courtyard of the Medici Palace. Gattamelata in Padua, the first bronze equestrian, or man-mounted-on-horse, statue to commemorate a non-ruler and the model for all subsequent equestrian monument. Donatello created two marble statues in a new style for the church of Or San Michele in about 1415 St. Mark and St. George as well as two bronze pulpits for the medici church just before his death on December 13 1466. Donatello was an innovator. His techniques have been copied by contemporaries and successors and still inspire artists today.

It has been pointed out that Donatello's use of linear perspective is imperfect here, because the orthogonals do not quite meet in a single vanishing point, but this imperfection is small and may have occurred in the chasing of the bronze, and not in the original design.
