We teach ending punctuation to help learners understand how to identify the meaning of the sentences they write and see. Ending punctuation helps signal to readers that a thought or sentence has ended. Understanding the features of a sentence will help students further their reading comprehension skills. Additionally, punctuation changes the tone and meaning of a sentence which will help learners to develop strong communication skills.

  • Class will work together to select correct ending punctuation marks for sentences using Neared. 

  • Frequent check-ins during instruction will be conducted to gauge comprehension

  • The following day, present a colorful worksheet on desks with 4-6 sentences and allow students to fill in the punctuation mark they think fits best. 

    • While students are doing this, display a period, exclamation mark and a question mark on the SMART board to remind students what they look like.
