Students usually come from circumstances such as war torn countries, refugee camps or have been on the run. Because of this, they haven’t been properly educated and have little to no literacy skills in their native tongue.

  1. Appropriate Adaptations -  Students who are ELD are assessed using the STEPS framework. It helps to identify the student’s strengths and provides strategies that are specific to the student.
  2. Incorporate Student Identity into the Learning- Students are more engaged when they’re able to share their life experiences and about their culture.  Can be done through “identity texts” . 
  3. Foundational Skills- Use literacy activities that are meaningful to the students. Foundational skills are built by  using oral language, visuals, use of first language, small group, use appropriate text that individualized for each student(by using “Selecting Texts to Align with STEP”)
  4. Integrating curriculum- Setting goals for curriculum, language, social and orientation are determined on the needs of each student.

  • Courses that encourage student participation such as music, health and physical education, art and international languages 
  • These courses don’t require language skills but social and practical skills which will help ease ELD students in and make them more comfortable in their new learning environment
