This shows how absorbed Mitch is with Blanche that he is so easily deceived by her words. And this is shown when Mitch didn't even realise that Blanche had evaded his question about her age.

Mitch fell for her deception because he believed her to be a proper upper class lady, but Stanley saw right through her act.
