In chapter one of our textbook we learned about the range and variety of assistive technology. In particular, about low-tech tools, mid-tech tools, and high-tech tools. How can these tools help special education students in the classroom? Provide examples. by Yerali Hernandez

According to Dell, Newton, and Petroff (2017, p. 5), Low-tech devices have no electronic components and are inexpensive. Mid-tech devices are electronic in nature but are less expensive than high tech devices and tend to be focused on a single task. High-tech devices are items that are based on sophisticated technology. All are tools that can help students in special education. Each tool serves a unique purpose. The school provides the right tools according to the needs of the student.

I see that you provided a core board link to your wall that is used through an electronic device. The core board concept I believe is great for the use in the classroom, it can provide students who are non verbal with an effective way to communicate. However, I have found that the low-tech version that is usually laminated folds of paper can provide a lot less stimulation to a child that can be distracted with the different components of a more technological use of a core board.

The use of assistive technology (AT) can be very beneficial for students with disabilities or other health impairments. In the classroom, for a student who is deaf (or Deaf) or hard of hearing, there are a variety of AT tools that would be beneficial, each ranging from low, mid, or high tech tools. In a classroom, a low-tech tool could be using pen and paper to communicate (if the student/teacher/aide does not know ASL, the student does not have a hearing aide, or the student/teacher do not have another method of communication), a mid-tech tool could be closed captions on any videos played in class, and a high-tech tool could be digital hearing aids.

A low- tech tool like lined paper with bigger spacing can help students who aren't up to par with their fine motor skills such as holding a pencil because it gives them more space to fit their writing. A high- tech tool like a speech- to- text device can be beneficial to a non verbal student.
