Phillips House, Salem, Mass.1821

Several features of this house immediately caught my attention, starting with the trims and baseboards on the first floor. The woodwork is highly detailed and beautifully crafted, something that is difficult to find in modern homes unless it is custom-built. Unlike contemporary houses that prioritize cost and efficiency, this home reflects an era when builders invested significant care in craftsmanship.

The fireplaces were another highlight, with their marble finishes and intricate detailing that emphasize elegance and permanence. Each one feels like a centerpiece of its room, in contrast to today’s simpler stone or tile designs. The kitchen layout was also unique, with cabinetry placed separately from the main cooking area. While this may have been practical at the time, it would feel less convenient by modern standards. Similarly, some of the third-floor bedrooms had no closets, which shows how expectations for functional living spaces have evolved.

The current post color is Black.

The exterior details add to the home’s character as well. The roof combines two different styles: a gable roof on the right and back sides, and a hip roof on the front and left sides, creating visual interest and balance. The oversized front door, much larger than those in typical modern houses, gives the entrance a strong presence and a sense of charm. Altogether, these features—trims, windows, fireplaces, rooflines, and doors—showcase the artistry and individuality of older architecture, offering a striking contrast to the more standardized designs of new construction.
