Every year, over 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies, affecting over 6.6 million children. Anywhere between four and seven children are lost a day due to abuse and neglect in the U.S. alone (www.childhelp.org). These statistics are not including adults being abused. It's hard to put yourself in the position of someone being abused if it has never happened to you personally, but it does help to try. Some people don't even make an attempt to understand what these people are going through, let alone help them. Many people who have been abused, whether as a child or an adult, blame themselves for what someone else did to them. People who have been abused are more likely to develop PTSD and/or depression from their experiences (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). Despite Michelle's almost certain death, she managed to escape with her life, persevering only because of the hope of seeing her son again. These games are harsh and can be deadly, but he finds the courage to survive the unimaginable. He is considered an outcast by his peers, mainly because he always wears the same clothes. His "family" does not consider him to be part of their family anymore, rather a slave and a punching bag. Although the mom is the only one doing anything to him, he is angry at his father for letting it happen. His father tells him they'll get out of there one day, but as time progresses, David becomes less and less hopeful he will make it out alive.
