Monster Theory

The film came out in 90's which was a time where there was high levels of anxiety around teen and media violence. Scream highlights these fears by having a masked figure who is all over the media and is committed highly violent murders. The people behind Ghostface are regular high schoolers. This also follows monster theory due to having the killers be in the same crowd as their victim making the killer be part of the community and are among the group. The movie also plays into cultural curiosity into the world of a crazed murder who slashes their victims. People enjoy the unknown and suspense of the hidden identity. This lets the thoughts of lurking monsters be explored. They allow people to think about their own fears inside their own community.

Deviance

The movie is full of deviance. The most obvious form is the murders. Killing people is not the societal norm. The nature of these crimes is also deviant because Ghostface mock's their victim prior to killing them. They are also extremely violent often having high levels of overkill or untraditional killing methods. An example of this is when they killed Tatum Riley with the garage door. Another form of deviance is the enjoyment Ghostface gets from the terror their killings are spreading around the town. Lastly the lack of empathy from Billy and Stu throughout the film is a form of deviance due them not feeling any remorse for their crimes.

Stigma

The film has discreditable stigma as you can't look at someone and know they are a murder. Tribal stigma is seen when rumors about Sidney's dead mom's affairs taints the family's reputation and in turn has Sidney feel shame and seen negatively impacts her self image. The stigma of blemish of character due to Billy viewing Sidney as weak and emotional for not being able to get over her mother's death. Lastly passing is seen with Stu since he is not directly suspected as the killer. Billy is highly suspected but the involvement of Stu comes as a surprise during the "big reveal".

Applied Theory

The major theory being applied is Labeling Theory. This theory is seen all throughout the film. Primary deviance is seen when Billy is initially labeled as a suspect and Ghostface. This is accompanied by his labels of rebellious and troubled. Self-fulfilling prophecy is seen all throughout the film. Billy is labeled as troubled prior to the murders and accepts this role as he becomes Ghostface. Randy Meeks goes through self-fulfilling prophecy as his ideals on what makes a serial killer gets him labeled as a horror fanatic. His obsession with horror leads him to assume the role of the the town serial killer expert. He does this by giving out knowledge on what to look out for and the breaks in the "rules". Lastly secondary deviance can be seen when Sidney is labeled a victim even though her mom is the one murdered. This then leads her to be highly anxious and paranoid and begin to act like a victim.

Deviance Conceptualization

The conceptualization of deviance viewed in the 1996 Scream movie is the normative conceptualization. This is due to the fact there is a norm that murder is not accepted and acting mentally insane is not the normal behavior. There is a set or norms against murderous acts and is universally viewed as deviant.
