Coca Cola's Hit Superbowl Commercial "America the Beautiful"

https://youtu.be/rGC2E7GP52U
(Links to an external site.)

The hit anthem also titled "America, the Beautiful" which goes into depth about what makes America actually beautiful which is its green landscape, beautiful skies and the "brotherhood" we create with one another. In nowhere in this song does it mention skin color, sexual preference, religious beliefs etc. This song just focuses on the naturalistic aspect of beauty which is our surroundings, the different cultures, the music , the sound of laughter etc. According to the textbook, "As with music, developing the ability to critically examine arguments embedded in visuals is vital because they are an important means through which social life happens" (Sellnow 235).

The idea behind this commercial is to be able to say that "America is Beautiful because of its Diversity"

According to Storey, "there is only one human race, so when we divide people into groups of "race", we engage not in biological distinctions, but in cultural and historical ones" (Storey 168). With that being said, Coca Cola's message with this commercial is that of diversity and inclusion of all people no matter their skin color, or their sexual preferences or beliefs.

Although many people went on twitter and voiced out their opinions saying that the commercial was biased and that we did not needed to include different languages because we only speak english in this country. But statistically "America has a population of 320 million, with around 17% of the population being of Latino or Hispanic " Delmar-Morgan, A.(2014, February 3) America the Ugly: Coca-Cola's Super Bowl ad provokes xenophobic outrage on Twitter, Daily Mail. Those who speak Spanish also deserve to be included and appreciated and be considered "American" just like anyone else because they are also people and they are also working hard in this country to make it what it is today.

The Topic of Racism may arise with this Commercial

Now I know that Racism can be a very hasty topic to speak about in front of others but in this commercial we can see that many that may watch this commercial may view the actors as not being "Real Americans" because of the fact they're skin is not white, or that they are not Christian and believe in God, or that they are not "Heterosexual" and that is considered a sin and the most controversial part per se is the fact that they are all singing an "American song" in a language that is not English and automatically that is not true American Patriotism. The "American Song" is an example of a Synecdochal sign because it stands to represent the United States of America (the country). According to the textbook, "Synechdocal signs are a part or piece of something that serves to stand in for the whole" (Sellnow 242).Now this can call for a hasty debate on who can show that they are more American than the other just on the basis on beliefs, sexual preferences, and social background.
