He was the youngest of five. His father was never present, or part of his life and it was only his mother who took care of him.  Growing up Jackie was very poor. His African -American grandparents were slaves and even though slavery had long ended when Jackie was born, he and his family were still discriminated against in their hometown. Jackie was only 6 months old when his family moved to California. Growing up in California, Jackie loved sports. He played baseball with the neighborhood kids.  Jackie was so talented he could even hit an inside the park home run. Jackie looked up to his brother, Mack. His brother was a track star who won a silver medal under the eye of Adolf Hitler. When he returned to the United States he was treated unfairly and was not celebrated for his success.  He was forced to work as a garbage man. Well, if you didn't get ready to now! In his first year of baseball, Jackie slapped the ball so hard he scored 12 home runs and lead the Brooklyn Dodgers to a National League Pennant. In addition, the baseball legend was named Rookie of the Year and had a batting average of .347. The talented athlete was named MVP 6 times. This role model was the first player in 36 years to steal all the bases to home plate. While he was playing, he encouraged people to treat others equally. He played in six world series. In 1962, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. At 37 years old his number "42" was retired. In the year 1948 this history changer was given a Presidential Medal of Freedom for being a civil rights activist. Also, the multi-talented athlete was added to the Major League Baseball All Century team.
