When Peter asked Jesus about forgiveness, he taught there was no limit. Peter asked “how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?”

Jesus said “not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times”

Jesus taught that forgiveness towards a fellow human being is essential if a person wants to be forgiven by God. This is stated in the Lord’s prayer “and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors”

Parable of the unforgiving servant

The Parable of the unforgiving debtor (Matthew 18:23-35)

In this parable, the king forgave the servant a debt of billions of pounds. Then this servant met another servant who owned him £100. The first servant insisted on having the other money repaid, and when the second servant could not do this, the first servant put him into the debtors’ prison along with his family. When the king heard about this, he demanded that the first servant repay all his debt to him and put the servant into prison until all the billions of pounds were repaid. In this parable, Jesus taught that God will only forgive someone who is wiling to share this forgiveness.
