Before starting our term project the educators spend two weeks observing and collating evidence of the children's interest at this time. It is from these findings that we start our journey of learning. I believe strongly in the vital work of deep listening for without the children's interest we will struggle to succeed.

Mel Kateros

I believe in encouraging children to control their learning environment, therefore through engaging conversations with children as individuals and as a whole, I encourage discussions about the activities I provide, what they liked, what they didn't and provide a forum for them to voice their thoughts and ideas to shape the program. I feel these opportunities promote independence and encourage self directed learning along with increasing literacy skills. Through this process it can show me that what I though would be a good extension of learning for a particular child, may not actually suit their interests prompting me to gather further information on their interests and develop a new learning activity to implement. In the forum discussions they may also express the extension for their own learning, supporting my teaching practices to be child lead and focused. Krysta Watters

At times we may feel asking for help displays a weakness in our knowledge or skills but I believe educators should be openly seeking more understanding on a range of topics at all times. Our students face many challenges and we cant expect to have dealt with each new issue previously or even to understand the problem fully. We therefore have to be humble enough to realize this and acknowledge that we need to educate ourselves on the best practice or intervention we can implement so as to best support the student.

It also enables us to trial ideas that we would not have usually implemented and to test to see if they fit with our teaching styles and theory of practice.

Although I have had little experience being involved in Professional Development Seminars or days outside of University, I feel that I get a similar if not more thorough example through placements. Through observations of mentors during the last 4 years, I have experienced a wealth of professional development theories, ideas, and practices. I have seen these being applied by my mentor and then applied them, reflected and modified them myself to suit my teaching style.
