Techniques for Instruction

1. 3-2-1 Technique. This is where the student would write 3 things they learned in the lecutre, 2 things they found interesting, and then add 1 question they still have re: the content covered. This would help me guage where the student is and what else I need to do to make sure they are on the right track.

2. Group grid. This format would allow the student to critically think through each item and apply it to the correct "box" within the grid. This might be a little challenging for some students who thrive in a more verbal-lecture setting. But with nursing, things are typically much more hands on.

3. Quick write. It is so important for nursing students to be able to think quick on their feet! This method will help the student cultivate ways to sharpen their skills while applying information learned during class.

4. Translate That. This one would be important for any student who is attempting to survive pharmacology and med administrations haha :)

5. Post Test Analysis. Honestly, I'm not sure we do enough of these throughout nursing school. The #1 goal for a nursing student is to succeed in state boards. The only way for students to grow in their ability to succeed in exams is if they are able to identify patterns that need to change throughout the program.

6. Triple Jump. These 3 steps would help nursing students develop their critical thinking skills needed to work on the floor post-graduation.

7. Variations. This would help students understand what would happen if they chose Option A as opposed to Option B during an intervention.

8. Individual Readiness Assurance Tests. We took several exams like these in the last semester of my program. To this day I am absolutely convinced one of the reasons why I was so successful with boards is because I took every single practice exam possible known to mankind. I am not exaggerating when I say that I completed more than 20,000 practice questions in UWorld and ATI.

9. Advance organizers. This will help the students prepare ahead of time prior to the lecture. Sometimes it can be a little "hair on fire" trying to get to a lecture in nursing school. This method will help the student learn how to prepare the night before so the morning of will be a lot easier for them to learn, apply, and retain the material.

10. Online Scavenger Resource Hunt. It goes without saying that students these days need to know how to navigate the internet for school AND for work lol :)

A nursing leader is only effective if the material covered is comprehended and applied by the student. As your educator this semester, my #1 commitment is to ensure the material covered is delivered appropriately, effectively, and timely.

My passion in life is communication. For a message is only received by the other party if it is effectively communicated in their specific “language”. Meaning, some instructors teach by auditory methods while others are more visual. As an instructor, my goal would be to ensure I am utilizing auditory, visual, and kinesthetic methods for my students. Interactive case studies would be applicable for those who are kinesthetic learners. Auditory recipients would benefit from the lectures. And visual learners would be better equipped in the comprehension of powerpoint presentations, charts, and diagrams depicting the importance of each goal established throughout the module.

A strong nurse leader can set the tone for the future careers of our nursing students. As your nursing leader, I will lead by example, setting a tone for students to feel comfortable, supported, and encouraged throughout their academic career.

I am a natural-born cheerleader who inspires, motivates, reassures, and encourages every person I encounter. I remain committed to you and your future as you set out on your career in nursing.
