I definitely think that technology should be incorporated into the elementary classroom! I think that it is important to find a balance when using it though, so that it is still beneficial to learning and not a distraction. Also, as a teacher, we have to be careful with how much we use. I think that it should enhance the lesson, not teach it for you. I think that students can benefit from lessons in which they are able to use technology to enhance those lessons, whether that be by playing a game that includes aspects of the lesson such as word matching, or playing a math facts game. Technology is such a huge part of our society, and our students know it well for the most part. I think when used correctly, technology can be beneficial to the classroom and should be included.
-AS

In my opinion technology should be incorporated into today's elementary classroom but it should not be the only tool utilized. One, if I can teach my class only using videos or clips or things I found on the internet... why do they need me to teach? When "technology" can do it for me. Two, I just don't like the idea of utilizing something so often that it's easy to forget that there is an alternative and potential real life experience to be had.

I am a mother of three and technology is very limited in my house. My children don't watch television (unless we set-up the projector and have a family movie night) and are not allowed computer time (unless needed for homework.) I don't feel like my children are technologically stunted because I am cautious and selective about when, where, and the amount of technology they have access to. They are proficient, although their expose is limited and I will most likely mimic that in my classroom.
-BS

I think in some cases, technology is vital in classrooms. My focus is on special education and there are some incredible technology tools that make it possible for students to participate in class. Technology can make learning and being a part of a classroom that much more valuable, but it can also be a distraction for some students. If technology is used as a resource for learning I think it's great but it shouldn't be something that you just hand your students because you don't want to take the time to teach or something that they have unlimited access to.
-MB

I think that technology is amazing and really can enhance the quality of learning in the classroom. With that said, technology can be easily overused. I will use technology in my classroom but I will not let technology teach for me. I will be the teacher and only use technology to help enhance my lesson. Sometimes teachers overuse technology and allow technology to teach for them and when it is used in that way I think that it is no longer valuable.

- AD

I believe that technology can have a huge impact in the classroom as well as the opposite. I have had many teachers that have successfully incorporated technology into the classroom in a meaningful and complimentary way. They teach and then find an appropriate form of technology to tag alone with what the students are learning about and help the students to develop a deeper understanding of that specific topic. On the other hand I have had teachers use technology in a completely inappropriate way. While at the time I enjoyed this, now that I have chosen that path of becoming a teacher I can see how poorly some of my past teachers have used technology. I remember in high school I would be so excited when I walked into my anatomy class to see that we had a substitute that day because that meant we would only be watching a video that was more entertaining than related to anatomy. I believe that if technology can be used in a complimentary and appropriate manner then yes, it should be incorporated into the classroom.

-GR

I think that having technology in the classroom is becoming something that is almost essential to teaching. I think that so much of the content that is provided to teachers now is provided to them in a format that is best displayed through the use of technology. I think that it is best, however, to make sure that you are providing your students with alternatives to learning with technology. I think too often now, students are becoming dependent on technology for every little thing. if we expect our students to be able to do things outside of what we have taught our students, then we need to make sure that we are teaching them the proper way to do it without technology as well.

I think that ultimately having technology in the classroom can be helpful. For example, the class that I do my practicum in uses technology whenever they are working on their sight words, they also use technology to help with behavior management. The teacher has an iPad that has the "Class Dojo" app on it that monitors the student's good behaviors, as well as their bad ones. However, I think that at the same time, we can overuse technology in the classroom. For example, my cooperating teacher will put the book up on the board electronically and play the recording that comes with the book to read the book aloud to the students. I think that this is ineffective because the way that the book is read I too monotone. I think that if the teacher were to put the book up on the board but read it aloud herself, it would be much more effective.

-AB

I do think that technology could be incorporated in the classroom, but not in excess. I used to think that there should be no technology in the lower grades, and only minimal in the upper grades. Lower grades would be birth - 3rd grade, and upper grades are 4th grade and on. I think that technology is good in the sense that a student can research topics more easily, but it should not replace the teacher. There have been so many times where a teacher has said, “Today we are going to watch a video.” As a student, I was like, “YES! I get to go to sleep!” <— That is not okay. At lower levels, although I used to think that there should be none, I have since changed my mind a tad bit to where I believe that a little bit doesn’t hurt. It can even help. I do not plan on using tons of technology with my students, though, as a way to learn the material. As a teacher, I am going to be researching a lot on ways to help my students learn, through technology, but this is different than having them be on a computer for the majority of the day, especially at the lower grade levels.
-BH

I think it depends on the scenario of what you are wanting to use technology for. I think it is important for students to learn about technology and how to use it because technology is a main part of society these days. Most everything we do relates back to technology. It is the world that children grow up in.

I do think that it can be implemented into the classroom too much. Students do not need to be overwhelmed with it. Also, technology should not be a tool used that takes the place of the teacher. Technology should enhance what the teacher is already introduced/teaching.

-MGB

I think technology can be great resource for classrooms, if used appropriately. Technology is great when it is used to enhance a learning experience, but I do not think all lessons should revolve around it. In other words, it is not acceptable for the technology to do the teachers job by replacing them. Technology time should be limited, and used in a way that does not distract students. Obviously, technology has become a huge part of our society and I think it is beneficial for students to practice utilizing it at a young age to prepare them for the future.

-RW

I feel that there is no choice but to incorporate technology into the classroom. Teachers would be doing their students a disservice by leaving it out of the curriculum. Technology is not going away so children need to be armed with a general working knowledge of the real world. As far as how much, I believe it depends on the way the technology is being used. It if NOT okay to use technology as a babysitter so you can get things done. As long as you can provide a balance of using and not using technology, students will be more well-rounded and prepared for their future.

-EV
