The PTable website provides an interactive periodic table, which provides information beyond that of a standard printed periodic table. Students can use this website to access information on each class of element, the natural state of elements as well information pertaining to the various groups and periods. In addition to this, students can select various options such as the natural states (solid, liquid, gas, unknown), the classes of elements (e.g. metals, non-metals), and the interactive periodic table will highlight the elements that belong to these categories. A benefit of using PTable to support higher order pedagogy is that it provides a lot of information at students’ fingertips and allows them to explore the information and identify patterns and trends in the element arrangement.

The Phet Colorado website is a tool that allows the operator to build their own atoms by selecting the number of protons, neutrons and electrons. As additional protons are selected, the identity of the element changes. These are shown to be in the nucleus of the created atom along with neutrons and the electrons fall into the correct shell according to the number added. This reinforces atomic structure to students, allows students to test and prove their theoretical learning by visualising the change in element identity with the modification of subatomic particles and provides a tool for students to easily see patterns relating to subatomic particle numbers and location, element identity and atomic size. Utilising this tool, students can synthesise their knowledge of the periodic table and atomic structure and further solidify their understanding.

The Phet Colorado website also allows students to check their understanding, providing immediate feedback. Phet Colorado provides ‘challenges’ which assesses student learning on content pertaining to the website. For example, the ‘Build an Atom’ challenge, provides five questions which will assess students’ understanding of this topic.
