What did I know about Painting before the module?

I used to believe that paintings was defined as an art that is transformed from a blank canvas to a piece of art by the use of different painting mediums, such as: oil, charcoal, acrylic and watercolor. I knew that the people who created these paintings were called painters or artists. In addition, I knew that there were different types of paintings depicted to the audience, and for most of the time it represented a style of the historic period. Hence, there were some variations of some paintings due to the historic age. Aside from the Renaissance paintings or baroque paintings, there are other styles such as abstract art. It may be quite more challenging to grasp the concept behind the painting.

Truth be told, before taking the module I did not know a lot about sculptures. I just appreciated them from a distance-- being able to see three-dimensional figures on a platform or displayed in formal and public institutions. Like most art forms, I did not appreciate nor acknowledge fine art, rather it was a figure or object that took up space. In other words, there was nothing more to it; nothing special, but in reality, my perspective changed throughout the course.

What did I learn in the module about the form of sculpture as a Fine Art?

- As defined by the dictionary, painting is defined as the practice of applying paint or other media to a surface, usually with a brush.
- In class we discussed certain paintings during the Renaissance, and it was period of creativity where religious or biblical stories were subjects of most, if not all, artworks. Moreover, it was a revival of the Greek and Roman art in most forms of art not just in paintings.
- All art forms have notable artists, and for this module it were: Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Caravaggio.
- Each artist had their own technique, take for example: Da Vinci, he used the different perspectives when doing his work, and Michelangelo, he used the walls and ceilings as his canvas and most of his artworks had portions that each had a meaning.
- If there was something that I observed and was established in class was some of the styli's traits during the High Renaissance; namely, (1) the harmony and balance, (2) dignified and calm movement, and (3) there is a point of focus, but this someone differs for Raphael. In addition, the idea and perspective about space evolved in this time when artists often used the line or aerial perspective in creating their artworks.

Since paintings are one of the most remarkable fine art pieces created, I would appreciate it if I were told how artists were able to come up or get inspiration to such pieces. Personally, I would want to read and go beyond the readings required in class, and go to certain places where a field trip could be held.

We could be more engaged with the artworks, more so is we would be able to communicate with local artists and understand their techniques. In doing this, we would also gain knowledge to the topic, and it would give us a better comprehension because of the insights of the artists. I believe this would foster a more engaging practice, so the students could better comprehend the topic on Painting.
